I bought these heads recently. They were advertised as Blue Thunder heads with raised ford exhaust ports. They don't look like the heads Blue Thunder sells now.
Actually there is no identifying marks that I can read on them. There was something stamped on the end of one of them, but someone stamped a bunch of "X"s over the letters/numbers.
I measured the valves, they are 2.25" and 1.76".
Does anyone know what heads these are? Are they worth sinking some money into? One disassembled one needs the guides replaced, and they have quite a lot of porosity.
no they're not blue thunder,in fact if you got them from a dragster guy then they are probaly one of the sets I used to have, what were you looking to know?
The humps in the exhaust ports, do you think that there would be any advantage to removing them? If the heads were experimental, I am thinking that the hump must have not been much a good idea because no other heads that I have seen use them.
Do you have an estimate what these heads power potential would be?
Did the other sets you had have porosity issues as well?
Are these heads more suitable as "collectors" items than a performance head? I would be happy with 600-650 HP on a 545 stroker. They need some work done, guides, valve job, resurfacing, and possibly having the chambers coated. Would you think that they were worth putting money into? I am not in the position to drop a couple grand into a new set of BBF heads.
My pistons are flat tops so I would need large chambers to keep the motor pump gas friendly, do you remember the chamber size?
I wont answer for Boss 429, but just general answers to you questions. The heads are more of a collectors item than a all out performance part. Although they were probably pretty good back in the day since there was zero aftermarket for Ford stuff!!
The bump in the exhaust port looks more like what they call a "vane" it helps direct the flow towards a certain point in the port.
Taking it down may not be a good idea, unless the work is verified on a flow bench.
The porosity looks pretty substantial, I wonder what the integrity of the whole casting is!!
The seats are inserts, and would be harder than the normal induction hardened seats of the D3 and later iron heads.
They are an interesting pair of heads, but I dont know if I would sacrifice them today on a running motor.
Just my 02
Those look like the early Ford expirimental heads. Seen a few at the old "Ford Power Parts" shop yrs ago. They were made by Ford in the early 70's, basically a production CJ copy, but with a taller/raised exhaust port.
