I have a 92 f-350 with a 460 and am planning on putting a turbo on it. The engine is completely stock(I am planning on installing headers). I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what turbo to use. I am planning to try and pull one off of a 7.3, but I've been told this won't work and they can't seem to tell me why, and if it does work what would be a safe psi to run it at? I would like to try and do this for under a $1,000. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Under $1000 for everything??
You will have to fab up the system yourself, and probably use a cheap Chinese ebay turbo, plus all the piping, and dont forget a blow-off valve, and upgraded fuel pump and system.

For anything over 8 psi of boost, you are getting into the need for forged pistons.

you aren't going to make this happen for under $1000 unless you are planning to knock off a truck carying turbo kit supplies. To do it properly you are going to need too much stuff. Wastegate, blow off, intercooler, boost guage, boost controller, turbo and all the couplers etc to put it together. In addition you are going to have to fabricate or purchase both hot and cold side piping.

is anyone here running a turbo setup? ive been giving it some thought and just happen to have a turbo and some piping off my 99 f-350 that has a 7.3 . i upgraded them a little while ago . and im planing a built motor for my 65 f-100 that has a 429 in it now. any comments , problems , ect... i know why they said the 7.3 turbo (wont work) its the oil line input and output they are made to bolt to a mount that feeds and drains to the block not a line or hose. x 2 on the nogo at 1000.00 unless you have the parts already.

I was running a turbo on my 03 cobra previoulsy and now am building a BBF twin turbo combo for it. Sounds like you already know why the turbos are a no go. I don't see why you couldn't reuse the piping although i doubt it will all line up properly on any motor but the 7.3.

Well I can tell you that you cannot make a turbo off a 7.3 diesel work on anything else but a 7.3. The turbos on those trucks have a weird mounting flange on the bottom, which happens to be where the oil return is. It is sealed with an o-ring, and duplicating that flange to make it work, would be difficult. It's not impossible, just impractical.

If you really want to put a turbo on your truck, buy a quality turbo, and build from scratch.

Plus, turbos on most pickup trucks we're picked the needs of that particular engine. A typical 7.3 will hardly ever see anything above 3000 rpm's, and your typical turbo race engine will see more than double that. Meaning that a 7.3's turbo wouldn't hold up to usage like that. Buy a precision or turbonetics turbo, and don't look back.
