My machine shop hit me with the bill today and I thought it was kind of high?
DOVE block
Align hone, zero deck block, .030 bore with plate, mag the block, ballance new scatt stroker kit, took two slugs mallory. and that was it. No head work. The bill $1035.00 I havent picked it up yet but that seems pretty high to me. Can anyone tell me what these things should be costing me?

Thanks

High performance engines of most any kind aren't free nor are they cheap. The bill sounds pretty much dead-on to me.

And dare I say....if you want a motor nicely prepped, machined and (possibly) assembled then you're going to have to certainly pay for it. And you basically just got your shortblock prepped, machined and ready for assy for only a thousand. That sounds great to me.

That's about right for what you had done. I had alot of quotes around here in Jersey, BEFORE I started my build, so I knew what I was going to need. BTW, I bought my SCAT rotating assembly already balanced, so I wonder how much you would have saved by doing it that way?

Around here for a complete performance machine work, without balancing the rotating ***'y it's no more than $650. So that would sound about right once you add heavy metal and balancing.

This is of course the machinist actualy did every machine step needed.

I'll confirm too... That sounds pretty darn close for Detroit prices - - $700 for the block work and $400 for the balance. The mallory is like $75 a slug all by itself...

Sounds dead on to me too. Especially with balancing the crank and two slugs of Mallory.

I used to get this type of hysteria when I was building modular engines. I'd deliver them a complete engine with $1200 worth of machine work (block and heads) and they would freak out.

The name of the shop in Portland Oregon is EASCO machine and they do great work and have a top of the line balancer.
I forgot to mention that he also shot peened the crank. He recomended it so I went with it but not real sure how much benifit that is. Is this pretty common?
