Well after selling off 3 engines I have built for this car I am finally going to install a big block in her.

I had a 70K mile unmolested C9 lincoln 460 which was essentially a good runner with no bore wear or inappropriate wear anywhere excepting the timing set which still had the nylon teeth on the cam gear. Decided to build an engine with parts lying around the shop so here is what I have"

Block decked .012" to set pistons .002 out of the bore

Stock C9 pistons with 11 cc dish. Will notch for large valves.

Reringed and a quick hone to freshen the straight cylinder bores.

Polished crank and select fit .001" clevite bearings

Paul Kane modded std volume oil pump.

Voodoo cam 219/227 on a 110 with mid 500" s lift ground with 4 degrees advance. Installed 1 degree advanced to 105 ICL. (Cam and lifter set free courtesy of my cam grinder.)

1.8 ratio comp high teck stainless roller rockers for .560" / .582" final lift

RPM intake gasket matched to felpro std gasket.

Edelbrock large chamber heads fully ported concentrating on good flow under .600" lift, decked .060" and .030" off of the intake side. 10.1 to 1 final C/R with an 8.8 to 1 DCR. (Thank you for the good deal Dave Ohagin) 330/233 cfm @ .600" lift. Squish grooves.

Holley 750 reworked by bobby at competition carbs. choke tower removed, rear metering block added, emulsion circuits reworked, air bleeds set up for this combo, quick change vac sec dashpot cover. Flows 820 cfm with down leg boosters that have been massaged and have a shear ledge.
.
Summit high volume mechanical fuel pump. Vehicle has 3/8" fuel lines and a 5/16" return

Dual snorkle 5.0 HO aircleaner with K&N filter ducted to cool air on sides of radiator.

Headers TBD either 6126 hookers or FPA headers.

3" X pipe and magnaflows with 2.5" tail pipes

B&M holeshot 2400 stall convertor purchased from a forum member thank you Andy M!!! Killer deal.
3.25 or 3.5 gears with trak loc. Already have 2.75 trak loc 9" now just need to change gears.

With a full iron 400 and a/c she weighed 4320 pounds. Should come in at around 4150 with all a/c removed and the aluminum heads, intake and water pump on the 460.

I am going to conservatively estimate HP at 460 and torque at 510.

I may change the cam to an EX solid flat tappet 230/236 @ .050 .584" / .600" lift ground again on a 110 because of the 1.8 rockers. would be 109 with std rockers.

The idea as the name states is to run 12.99 at about 105+ mph. Traction will be a huge problem I know...

Getting there slow but sure. The ram air set up took all afternoon to set up right...

Nice intake setup...
I think that the 80's dual-snorkel mustang air cleaners that we were using are restrictive for engines of your caliber(mine is, and it is a much milder engine).
I left a rag in the inner fender well of mine probably 6-8" away from the opening of the corresponding hose on that side and the engine sucked it right up and had it plastered against the outside of the air cleaner element! lol

My 5.0 HO air cleaner housing with K&N filter cost 8 HP on the engine dyno. Not too bad considering the small size of the filter.

Kitty prints on the hood too. Just after I washed it too. Damn neighbors leaving their cats out...

Looks great, can't wait to see what it runs.
It's surprising to me that it loses 8 hp with the air cleaner setup.
I wonder what it would be with the filter out but still using the cold air setup.
Even though it may lose some hp on the dyno, it's possible it will still run quicker with the setup connected.

Nick,

The recent cold air intake set up is NOT the one I was referring to.

The 5.0 HO dual snorkel air cleaner cost only 8 HP when the engine was on the engine dyno 2 years ago...

The current set up VS the K&N open element it replaced feels much better and needed a bit of jet as it leaned out WOT

Thank you. There is an 11.99 there. DA was 2063" and it was in the 80's

3.50 27.7" tall 295 55 15 MT ET Drag radial.

11" 3450 stall convertor.

Will do later today.

Nice! And around a 1000 lbs heavier than my car.
Guys, I saw this car in person and it is sweet. The under hood detail is awesome. The cold air intake is something I need to do.
Good job!

Oh and I liked the wheels too!

Here is an SAE Net chassis dyno run from last Friday:

456.5 RWHP @ 6,200 rpm
449.09 TQ

Remember the cam is 224 center 4 /228 corners /234 110/112 Three pattern juice roller with solid roller lifters. 0 lash cold. 1.8 comp ultra pro magnum rockers. Pulls like a freight train to 6,500 in every gear.

Car is very tenable on the street. Manners are great.

http://youtu.be/Htp3_-iziuc

A/F was rich at 12.4 / 1

I did NO tuning at the track. A/F was still FAT. I felt it more important to get used to the set up and figure out how to hook.

Thank you to everyone who commented and followed this build. It was long and had some hiccups along the way but in the end the results were well worth waiting for. There is certainly an 11.9x pass in her as she sits now. I need to lean her out a bit though.

Special shout outs to and in no particular order:

Steve price for traction help, trim pieces and shocks.

Brett for the nice msd box

Clay parker for the referral to tim lyons for wheels.

Paul for the referral to the police speedo.

Derek for the chrome T stat housing.

Frank Merkle for the R billet servo.

Sorry if I overlooked anyone or anything.

Windsor,

I can post the complete finalized build here if wanted.

High 11 low 12 second full sized cars are not unusual. What is unusual here is a small cammed and very streetable combo doing it with a stock low mileage C9 rotating assembly properly refreshed.

All of the details added up. Ram air, 3" exhaust etc etc...

Thanxx again all !!!

I think we all owe you thanks for taking the time to document this build and sharing all of the testing and results with us.

And yes, please do post your finalized build if you could. I think it would be beneficial for all. Thanks again.

Thank you.

There are many engines like this running in cars and trucks. Some we've built and others we sent top end packages for.

The abundant, high velocity air flow and mild cam mantra works on the street.

This package works better with an RPM or Airgap intake port matched than a CJ type intake. At least for torque anyway.

I am using a 6 quart front sump truck pan. No baffling.

HFD / Paul Kane M84D street strip std volume pump and canton pick up, Mods to pump mounting passage including radiused entry, rolled short turn into passage to filter. Passage enlarged to 9/16"

with 10 / 30 Joe gibbs synthetic I have 30 at hot idle and 60 psi at 2K and up. No pressure loss at track.

In all honesty I feel a better baffled pan is in order given the track times for peace of mind.

My oil clearances are on the tight side to keep windage down.

I will likely go to 5 / 30 on my next oil change.

IDK at the moment. I know that there is an 11.9X run in her. For right now that is good enough.

My offer on a one owner 90K 1972 thunderbird has been accepted.

I have a 4 bolt SCJ block, 557 rotating assembly, dommy victor intake, SCJ heads etc for this project... Final build specs TBD...

11 second T bird? Hmm...

Hmm yeah, someone with the same car as you but with 4 doors said you'd break into the 11's haha!

C'mon man, im running upper 13's in my tank.. figure youd definitely break into the 11's!
Would love to swap your motor into my ride now

good to see you followed my lead on Slick sizes, thru my trial and errors. 295-55-15 fits perfectly in the wheel wells don't it ;)
25 psi.. hmm try 18!

#360 ·
Thanxx guys for the good word. I am very pleased with the outcome given the essentially street nature of the cars use.

I have cinched the deal for a vortech blower and custom bracketry for my next project which is still in the planning / accumulation stages.

Just read this thread and love it!! Great car and build!!

I'm putting a 521 stroker in a '78 Continental Coupe and have really enjoyed reading about all the BIG Ford products with big blocks. I'm also going for the stock appearance except under the hood.

You mentioned that the rear end sits higher than stock. Was that necessary to fit the 295 55 15 tires? I'll be looking for the widest wheels and tires that will fit in the wheel wells with stock, or slightly lower (old springs), rear end height. Also need the wheels to accept the stock full 15" hub caps.
