If it didn't boil dry it likely won't hurt it. An engine that has been seriously overheated will start to smoke out the exhaust because the heat wrecks the rings.

I only paid $39 for it so I can nail it...

Check it out like I said in my previous post before deciding to rebuild it. I'd bet there's exhaust getting into the crankcase. If you had one cylinder low on compression it would be a head gasket....

The ring must be sticking in the groove. You shouldn't be able to get carbon buildup on the face of the ring like that. I'd put in a new piston with new rings on that cylinder.
