most pistons i have seen have a dull coat finish to the top of them. i would imagine its just the cast pores. some however have a clean machined look and almost seems polished. is there any difference in performance between polished and cast pistons? quenching? less chance for carbon to stick?
Removing any "sharp" edges can help if you are worried of detonation. Pistons that are cnc cut on top can look polished in comparison to non cnc cut forged or cast pistons.
I round sharp corners on domes, fly cuts for valve clearance, then pollish them like a mirror.
