Default leaf spring set up

Am I thinking correctly? Spring leafs are designed to work as one? If I put a spacer in between each leaf then will that soften them up? I am thinking it will give more movement of each leaf which will let each leaf move until it hits the next which will let them progressively stiffen up as they contact each other. Is this correct and can anyone tell me the pro's and con's of doing this?

All you'll do is weaken the spring by way of metal fatigue.
Is this for a drag car??...cruiser??....truck??

If you replace the shorter leaves with longer ones it'll soften the ride.
