I'm interested in the beehive spring set up!


12.8-13.1 AF at WOT? That's where my WOT was when i initially put my timing to 30 total but it also touched at 13.2 at 6100rpms. so i put #1 on both primary and secondary to try to keep it under 13.0 the whole range.

The track and chassis dyno will tell what AF is best. Seems that there is consensus building that modern fast burn chambers do not need as rich an AF ratio as older less efficient chamber designs.

A "Don't try this at home, kids!" disclaimer might apply here. Yours is a carefully planned and executed build that purposely pushes the envelope for pump gas. Part of that process was special attention to cylinder distribution. For the average Joe using a single O/2 sensor reading the average A/F ratio for one bank, I think the generally recommended "safe" range of 12.5 to 12.8 still applies. Running an average 13+ at WOT could see the leanest cylinder(s) in the danger zone on a less than optimized combo.

You make a valid point.


My post applies to the SCJ and P-51 chambers only. I specifically stated "modern fast burn" chambers. All of the other offerings for the BBF today are variations of the original bath tub chamber design and as such the 12.5 ish range would apply. In the end trap speed and chassis dyno numbers while keeping an eye on the wide band are going to tell you what your particular combo likes best or needs...

XolieX found that as he moved AF from the low 12's to the 12.8's he picked up 25 hp or more on the chassis dyno. He has an RHP SCJ headed 521.

I should have qualified the statement in that the A/F's were in the high 12's touching 13/1 to 1 at one point not staying above or in the 13's through out several acceleration runs...

Very cool build!!!

I am waiting to see how the PMT trailing arm kit works out.
I would love to see installation pics as well.

I would like to add that kit to the rear of my 68 Galaxie with 501" BBF.
Drag radials do not hook up well until 3rd gear.

Nice intake setup...
I think that the 80's dual-snorkel mustang air cleaners that we were using are restrictive for engines of your caliber(mine is, and it is a much milder engine).
I left a rag in the inner fender well of mine probably 6-8" away from the opening of the corresponding hose on that side and the engine sucked it right up and had it plastered against the outside of the air cleaner element! lol

My 5.0 HO air cleaner housing with K&N filter cost 8 HP on the engine dyno. Not too bad considering the small size of the filter.

Looks great, can't wait to see what it runs.
It's surprising to me that it loses 8 hp with the air cleaner setup.
I wonder what it would be with the filter out but still using the cold air setup.
Even though it may lose some hp on the dyno, it's possible it will still run quicker with the setup connected.
