Default Engine Block Weights 460 iron vs. aluminum

Gentlemen,

I tried last night searching for the answers to this but could not find anything that clearly answered my questions.

Does anybody know what the weights are for the following engine blocks, bare, with just the main bearing caps:

Ford 460 production block
IDT Eliminator Sportsman block
Ford Aluminum 460 block

Thanks in advance,

Mike Johnson

My factory block with .080 over bore weighed about 215 lbs. My A460 block before any boring weighed right at 300 lbs. My 11.2" Roberts Design(A96) aluminum block with no boring ( has 4.48" sleeves) weighs 186 lbs. Hope this helps you.

Chris,

Many, many thanks.

I'm somewhat surprised that there is only a 30 lb or so weight diff between the factory iron block and the aluminum block.

Boring an A460 block to 4.600" removes about 50 pounds .

Mike, you have to fealize the factory block is 10.3" deck & the aluminum block has an 11.2" deck height. You have added .900 to the deck height.

Chris,

Oops, I should have qualified that I was looking for 10.3 deck height block weights.

Lem,

Thanks for the info about A460 blocks, so a machined A460 block would weigh in at around 250 lbs?

Anyone know if the IDT block weight at 275 is before or after machining?

Thanks,

Mike Johnson

Mike, I would guess a 10.3" aluminum block would be in the 140-150 lb range. Carroll Carter said it was about a 150 lb weight savings. Sorry that I forgot to post that earlier. ops: Especially since you were looking for stock deck heights.

Before. They are about 250lbs at 4.600 bore if my source is correct.

The A460 blocks come with a 4.340" bore..... -.020" . So , one could see that there would be a great reduction of wt. @ 4.600 from the as delivered bore . I am the the source of this info

A460 per Lem Evan's website = $2095

10.3"R.D. Aluminum per C&C = $5570

For a difference of = $ 3475

So you can actually buy two A460 blocks for less than an aluminum. A460 blocks are a good deal. How much are the top of the line IDT blocks? Aren't they about $2800-3000?

i think my block from c&c weighed about 150lbs compared to about 275-280 for an iron deal. my small block rdi aluminum 9.5 block only weighed about 80-90lbs.
