Smile Update - Soon In The 7's

, so I have cut and pasted it here. Engine/car build info in the above thread.

Latest is 8.0@162 ( Run E2 , 8.007@162.29 , 1.149 60ft , 3.272 330ft , 5.077@135.77 660ft , 6.653 1000ft. )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New season, new setup.

Moved from the 1250QF on C16 to 2500cfm throttle body and mechanical methanol injection.

Tune up is still very conservative at 35deg and fat on the fuel curve , but ran 8.0@162mph in the 1/4, against a 14knot headwind. It has easy 7.90s @ 165-170mph in it.

Removed internal oil pump and went for a Peterson single stage external pump plumbed into the rear sump, full windage trays , and new cam.

Comp cams custom grind roller to be kinder on springs and valve train yet take advantage of the under .700th flow balance of the A429 massaged heads. Went with 309deg CR intake and 313deg CR exhaust on 112. Lift is under .700 , and it has a broad torque curve .

Compression is still at 13.5:1 , still a Scat 9000 cast crank and H beams , and still 2 bolt mains "truck" block at 4.390.

We are going to lean it out for next meeting and try and get some sign of heat on plugs. ( still has the cad plating on them after five runs - too rich )

Question is , how long is she going to last?

John

congrats!!! I like the fact it's a set of A429's. Everyone gets hung up on the TFS streets and the P51's and begin thinking the A429's are junk....

vERY IMPRESSIVE , The old setup was even more impressive for what it consisted of. Those A429 ARE a good head.

Talking Thanks Guys

The A429s are nothing flash , but we like doing the most with less.We are trying to show people what a reasonably built standard block and affordable components can achieve. This goes with the C6 also , which we re-hooked up to vacuum so that it will shift up in drive when I come back down the return road.

The heads have had extensive chamber work and valves have been reduced to 2.19 and 1.735 to suit. Still using the S/S valves that came with the 429s , and an installed height of 1.950in. Chamber volume is 74cc. We use adaptor plates to Chevy type exhaust header flange to keep the headers as a saleable item. Also have port tongues welded to the adapters to fill the floor of the exhaust port level with the end of the short turn . This reduces turbulance into the header.

At 25 inches Hg..
.200 156.7 130.9
.400 272.6 225.2
.600 316.4 257.8
.700 316.6 259.8

headflow drops substantially after .700 lift. So we selected a cam that will work in this range and still get a decent charge into the cylinders.

Right now its quicker than your average well prepped BBC , and if she runs in the 7.80's and lives then its running with your typical BBC 555 steel cranked, jesel equipped expensive crate/super comp engined dragsters. All this with a standard block , cast crank , two bolt mains , Victor 460 manifold and used Isky 9995 springs with 300 on the seat .

Nice effort. I'm impressed with your performance using a C6.

The A-429's are excellent heads. All they need is the proper port work and they are will run with most BBC combo's and the other BBF heads such as Blue Thunder, SCJ, P-51 and TFS Street Heat.

Sorry to go off topic a little here , Mr Blair you continually make this statement . Have you done a lot of back to back testing with each cylinder head to prove this or is this your opinion ?

Ford fanatic,

the crank has been inspected about 4 times now. It would have about 100 runs on it , most under 7000rpm occassionally zinged to 7100-7200. Heavily worked on some of the counterweights , then about half the external counterweight removed for externally balanced.

All my machine and head work by Rory Taylor at SpeedTorque. I think Rory and Mark Sheehan still have the fastest Small Block powered car and Fastest Altered in the world. Rory is one of those old school masters.

once again, very nice #'s and lets not hijack this thread.
my comment was simply that I see a lot of people that take A429's off their cars and replace them with a set of p51's or tfs streets just so they can be in the cylinder head of the month club yet their cars don't run any better......
btw, welcome back!!!

I see what you are saying Rick , but I don't think anyone that really knows a little bit about cylinder heads would even suggest the A-429 cylinder head will compete with P-51'S on the track or the dyno.

Wdr460 is using a sound approach to the use of his cylinder heads and it shows by his et slips. Its just shows it's the combination that matters.

We got guys around here running good #'s here with a 429's also. I have seen door cars in the 5.30 's and dragsters in the 4.70 's. So we know they are not junk. I have seen some that did not run so good also.

Most people switch cylinder heads to upgrade and make more hp with new technology , not to be in the cylinder head of the month club.

Gary,

the C6 has been brilliant . Originally built for my 3700lb 1971 Fairlane when I had 460ci in front of it. Did about 300 faultless passes in that car. We pulled it apart twice for inspection and changed nothing , no bands , no clutches , nil.

Put the same box behind the 545 , without any changes. Did 100 passes last season between 8.75 and finishing with 8.25's , without issue. Pulled it down before this season, couple little hot spots on the steels , put old clutches back in and put a wider band in it. Thats all and again its faultless. Everyone wanted me to use a powerglide , but what would I do with the race team name "True To The Blue" if it had chevy stuff in it!!

Ian at JPP built the box with No8 torrington , and standard ford replacement parts. He modified the valve body to his own design. No trans brake. So again , trying to do more with less. The R&D of it makes the whole process of building and racing more fun. I couldnt be a racer that sends his motor or box out to be freshened , or be one to buy crate engines and crate transmissions. I bought the FMS 460 crate originally because I was starting with nothing and at $7000 with all new parts , it was a bargain I thought , specially over here where parts are as rare as rocking horse poop.

We are having fun and sharing our experiences , getting a few wins , all good.

This is how the car leaves the line with a 2.46 first gear and 3.89 rear gear. Its the fifth photo in the slideshow.
