Depends on your budget. Are you looking to go hydraulic, solid flat, solid roller? Assuming by budget, and since you didn't mention what heads, so assuming stock, then look at the Comp Cams Xtreme 4x4 cams for good torque, just don't expect it to rev to all that high. If you work your heads some and want to stay hydraulic, look at the FRPP C460 cam from Lem. It's only $100, and will be more than your motor will need.

I'd like to get 4500-5000. Yes they are stock heads. I'd like to go with non roller hydralic.... Cash is always an issue in this engine build.

I dont want to get a cam that will breath more than the stock heads will allow.. But use them efficently...

Give a call to Lem or Scott Johnson. Give them the full details and what you want to do with the truck and they will set you up with what you need.

Default Cam

Yes by all means talk to cam expert and I agree with something along the lines of the comp Extreme grinds. I am running one in a 466 w/stock dish pistons with DOVE heads about 9.1-9.3 comp. I think it is the one with about 0.524" lift and it has a very noticeable idle and pulls hard from 1800-4000. It will rev to 5000 but there is no acceleration there. If when I built this motor like 8 years ago, new about head porting it would have been done. If you can afford it porting the heads is probably one of the most overlooked and cheapest gains to be had when building a new motor. Good luck.

I would get the crank balanced with those pistons you are going to use.

Do you guys know if their is anything that can be done with the stock heads or are they 80 lbs of dead wt?

I'm trying to put money where it is best used so i can drop a few bucks on head work I'm sure it will pay off.. I'm just not sure what can be done with 87 stock truck heads for cheap...

After you join Scott's site. You will need some good carbide.

Get some of these in 2" & 6" you can also cut them down to 4"

These have a great cut & hold up to a newbie porters abuse.

Then get some of these:

This is the cheapest you can go, take your time let the tool do the work. I just finished my D3 head last night. it looks great I can't wait till I bolt them on.

Be sure to go through everything on Scott's site lots of great in fo on there..
