front cover

Nice cover Paul, Just a thought, do you think one could be made to accomidate electric water pumps like CSR with the mounting points milled down around a inch to gain radiater to pump clearance?? I would buy one for sure and i bet alot of Fox body owners would too instead of moving radiator forward or motor way back to gain clearance for electric fans big enough to cool big motors on street. Thanks ED

Hello Ed,

First, our cover accepts a Meziere electric waterpump (when used in conjuction with the Meziere big block Ford waterpump spacers).


ALso, these covers are sold with the waterpump pads solid/not drilled, so milling the front of the waterpump pads on the cover down one inch is indeed possible on these covers. It would be up to the end user to do this. However, this does not change the dimension at the front-center of the cover (where the timing chain resides) and so the main body of the traditional electric waterpump will still be in front of the case and at the same location dimensionally. The HFD Quick Change Timing Cover's chain case really isn't any taller than the OEM cover nor can any cover provide greater clearance overall. Ironically, the funny thing is that we just raised the waterpump pads to be equal with the rest of the case specifically so that Fox body owners could use this cover with a cover-mounted electric waterpump such as the Meziere. This was at repeated requests by Fox body owners, not the other way around such as you are now suggesting.

If you need more clearance, then there is no reason to stick with a waterpump that is mounted at the traditional location at the front of the engine. You can use a remote waterpump. Both Meziere and CSR make them, and they are $60-$90 less than the traditional waterpumps.

Additionally, if you study the picture above it's easy to see that if you use a remote waterpump you can then tap/plumb the cooling hoses into the 7 o'clock and 5 o'clock locations on the waterpump bosses on the timing cover (instead of out the forward facing area cover) which would give you far greater clearance and also look like a much more clean install. :)

People do it all the time, either against the front of the cover or against the block (between block and cover). In fact we have a build over here right now where we will be setting one up with a front motor plate. And when bolting the plate to the front of the cover, all our timing chain case mounting bolts holes are the same height so there are no spacers required (as are in the OEM cover).

4pt mount fitment, will it work with light mods ?

Looks better than the first ones I saw back in '04 or '05

paul ... in post 13 you said you could mount the motor plate between the cover and the block how do you do this machine the cover for the plate sorry if i have made this harder than it is thanks
Simply stated, if your engine plate is 0.250" thick, then just cut 0.250" off the backside of the Quick Change Timing Cover. Similarly, if your engine plate is 0.375 thick then cut 0.375" off the backside of the cover. Etcetera. (Of course when mounting your engine plate between block and front cover, the plate must overlap the entire timing cover mounting area on the block so that there are no gaps between the cover and block once all three components are sandwiched together.)

Note that if you mount the aluminum as a mid-plate (between front cover and block) that (in the case of the 460) you will need to reduce the mounting-side of the timing cover (any brand cover) equal to the thickness of the engine plate. In other words, if you use a 0.250" thick plate, you will need to cut the backside of the timing cover 0.250". This is because the oil pan bolt holes/oil pan gasket will not align with the cover moved forward 0.250", let alone the front cover seal's riding location.
