Best CI for unproved SCJ street motor

Hi, I want to build a powerful, responsive street mtr for my heavy 72 Torino. I plan on around 11:1 CR for efficiency and would like to know how many cubes would be best for unported SCJs. I'm looking for 500-700 NA with a 250 shot for the strip. I would prefer good throttle response, god low end torque and overdrive trans to keep the mpgs in the low to mid teens for cruising. I currently have the parts to build a 466 and/or a 557. I could just as easily sell and go with an optimum setup though. I will be taking this to Scotty J to match up a package just looking for a recommended starting point. Thanks.

I like the smaller displacement strokers (4.150/4.300 stroke) for a heavy car with street tires, especially if you're using a manual trans or low stall.....which is part of the reason I'm building a CJ headed 514 for my 73 Montego.

My 72 torino weights about 4400 and has had the 508 ci engine in it for a long time, Id do the 557.

the overdrive trans will be hard to get the right converter picked out, I wish MINE HAD AN OD. next time it will get a 557, 10.7 to 1 engine.

Mine is a 508,Iron head,off set ground crank,4.140, 9.5 to 1,victor 4500,

1250cfm dom, headers, this is a street car tho.

X2 the 557 would effortlessly put out what you needed and you could always go for more with cam, heads, intake change. They only say when building a house start with a good foundation. So why not have almost 100 more cubes in that same engine and not have to scream it to get the same power. Theres a guy on here with a 1972 mach1 that built a 552 and put it in and that thing is a torque monster off idle.

Have Scotty take you for a ride in his LTD may be strong enough for you... If not go big don't no if a overdrive for a big engine and nitrous is possible without going with a gear vendor... Myself a 460 on nitrous is a stout piece for the streets should put a Torino in the 10s for sure... And a overdrive will live with a small engine

460

I just built a .060 460 with eddy heads and a solid roller for a customer/friend and its in a cyclone (1970) and its not a super radical motor but it has run a mid 6.50's 1/8th mile time last night on motor and it weighs about 3600/3700 lbs so the 460's make a bunch of power with the stock stroke crank and some good heads

Wow, can we get some more details?

sure, I had several discussions with some Ford guy's last night at the track because they did not belive me/us when we said "its only a 460" we have a guy with a old 40 something P/U with a 514 and Dan with his 532 Toreno that said is it really? yes I built the .060 over 460 with speed pro pistons and H-beams and a .020/.020 crank .015 below the deck and Performer RPM's @ 70 cc's a little clean up in the bowls and intake gasket matched only period, comp 296BR-8 its .726/.726 and 260/268@.050 a victor 460 and a 1050 QF dommy the car has a FTI 8" 5000 converter and a PG tranny with a 430 gear with 29.5x13.5x15 MT's he runs the 7.00 index with the car, at test and tune before the race it went 6.57@105.75 and on the stop it went 7.002@104.50 and he went red in the second round by -.001

I'm leaning toward the 557. Does anybody know the mileage difference between a similarly built 460 and 557? If it's only going to be a couple mpg different I will definitely go with the 557. If the 460 is twice as fuel efficient like 16 vs 8 mpg then I'd go with the 460. Any mpg figures on 460/C6, 460/AOD, 557/C6, 557/some form of OD?

16 MPG from a mild 460 would be great, 12 is good

The 552 in my Mach 1 with a C6 and 3.90 rear gears is getting 9-10 mpg down the highway at 75 mph. I've got a 1800 stall converter in it and the thing just blows the tires off. Engine is fairly mild for a stroker (D0VE heads home ported with 2.25/1.76 valves, custom hydraulic flat tappet cam based on the big Lunati Voodoo from Scotty, 1.73 roller rockers, 2" primary Crites headers, Torker II, 850 double pumper.....that's the jist of the set-up but you can check out my build thread for more details if you want.) I couldn't be happier with the way it pulls like a freight train, idles all day in the 100 degree heat with my aluminum radiator and dual electric fans, and is dead nuts reliable. Only change I'd make would be to go to an overdrive, and I just happen to have a TH2004R and swap kit on the way to fix that situation. I think it'll get low to mid teens with a lock-up converter in the overdrive. Go with the cubes, you won't be sorry ;)
