I'm new to the forum (this is my secound post). I have a 76 ford 4X4 that I plan to use as a secound vehicle, play in the mudd, bogg, pull the boat etc. How affordably / efficently can I make 500 to 550 hp reliable hp on 89 octain? This question is probaly "simple" to you guys. I'm kinda new to this and dont want to reinvent the wheel (or waste money). Any suggestion on parts list / vendors etc would be greatly apprieciated. Im thinking I'll use a C-6 with a malual overdrive?? Thanks in advance.

the truck started life with a 300/6 and was "upgraded" to a 351. As for as budget, I guess I'm a little open (Im gona have to sell some other toys anyways). Reliabilty and cost are my two main concerns. Have not really thought about a stroker, are the reliability gains worth it? Also, what ways are better than others :).. be specific man ..lol..

500 horse power is not that hard to make with the 460's, I think that most say that 500 horse power is about the max you want to make with a stock bottum end, I know Lem Evans, a member on here builds motors and sells parts, his add is at the top of the page B.F. Evans race parts

Lem doesn't build motors as such, but will supply you with almost any part you need to build one.:)
The stroker motors are easy to do and will up the torque and as such the seat of the pants power you will feel. You can get a good 4.15 stroke rotating assembly from Adney Brown at Performance Crankshaft for a real reasonable amount. By the time you recon rods, grind crank and get pistons, you will be able to get a balanced assy from Adney for just a little more. For a little more you could go to a 4.3" stroke crank and up the ci a little more, your choice. Either way you will make the hp goal a little easier. HP/CI is what is happening with the strokers. The less hp/ci the easier it is to make reliable. 1 hp/ci is less stressfull than 1.5hp/ci, and so on. Hope this isn't confusing.:)

check out this thread, pretty useful information regarding these engines. take in mind that these are just builds to give you an idea what parts you might need to make what horsepower. to make a good 550 you can do it with stock heads but they will have to be thoroughly worked over and fitted with larger valves, and sometimes its easier to get better cylinder heads. Definitely gonna want some aftermarket rods, and of course what type of head you have dictates how to get the compression ratio you want. pay close attention to the section regarding quench.

Welcome to the forum. :D

Here is one way of getting your request:

Intake System:

Ram Air Box D14x5@110 KIT http://www.ramairbox.com/
950cfm Holley HP Ultra Carb professionally calibrated for your application http://competitioncarburetion.com/index.htm
Edelbrock Air-Gap Intake Manifold. Have Charlie Evans, a forum member, get it dialed in to the cylinder heads.

Cylinder Heads:

FRRP SCJ heads. Lem Evans, a forum member, as very good prices on them right now. Have Charlie Evans clean them up and get the valvetrain set-up for your application.

Short Block:

HFD stage I prepped D9TE block http://www.highflowdynamics.com/
Comp Cam XE274H Hydraulic flat tappet cam or equivalent (Specs:274/286 adv., 230/236@.050, .562/.565, 110 LSA)
4.5 stroker kit with pistons for 9 to 1 compression http://www.performancecrankshaft.com/
High volume oil pump http://www.highflowdynamics.com/
Deepened stock oil pan with windage tray http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/1624/

Exhaust:

2" headers to dual 3" pipes with H-pipe. Good flowing 3" Magnaflow mufflers or equivalent.

Hope that helps get you started.

One more question please..

thanks for all the great info.. I have another question if you guys dont mind. How close do you think I could get to 500hp / 89 oct mark with a stock short block (would I need to change the rods), set of pretty good heads, cam, good intake / card, headers?

I would think too many comprimises here. You may need to lower the expectations a little. 400hp and pump gas is a little more realistic with a 460 ci motor. I had a 472 with about 400 hp and it was a little finicky about the gas I fed it. It would pull great and spin all 4 tires mercilessly in mud in 4 Hi.:D

Anything over 450 horsepower while using a small camshaft and lower compression will require a supercharger, a turbo-charger or getting better CYLINDER HEADS, CYLINDER HEADS, CYLINDER HEADS.

which kit

It seems that a stroker is the way to go them. So where to start? Where does a guy find a good stroker "kit" at a good price (is there such a thing)? Is it better (possable) by a kit already balanced? How much mackine work is involved in a 514 (+/-) build, or do you go a little bigger at about the same price. I have not messed with any engine "building" since high school (its been awhile), and that was just a rebuild. Trying not to get in over my head. Any and all sugestions are apprieciated.. Thanks

1) So where to start?

2) Where does a guy find a good stroker "kit" at a good price (is there such a thing)?

3) Is it better (possable) by a kit already balanced?

4) How much mackine work is involved in a 514 (+/-) build, or do you go a little bigger at about the same price.
1) http://www.performancecrankshaft.com/

2) Same place. Adney has good prices and a good finished product.

3) Yes. You can get the whole kit; crank, rods, pistons, rings, and bearings.

4) As I posted before, you can use a 4.5 stroke no problem. I would suggest using a D9TE block. The price will be the same.

Hope that helps,

Dave
