Default Timing gear spacer or slinger

What does this piece do? I slept some since I disassembled this motor, I believe this goes between the timing gear and the crank snout washer. Is it oil slinger or something? Thanks!

Yes ... it goes behind the front cover, in front of the timing gear.
It is to sling excess oil to keep it from getting to the front seal. It is usually not necessary, (except with an engine in a nose down attitude like some marine engines), with today's available polymer, double lip seals.
