Default 1984 460 heads

Getting ready to do the heads on my ford 460 one ton 5th wheel hauler and have no way to pull engine where I live so am asking for advice and method to remove the heads--step by step or walkthru would be good. Is there a viedo or word process on this fourm? (new member)
The problem seems to be sticking intake valves as the engine pops up thru the carb and runs rough on throdel down--it has around 90,000 miles and sits a lot--8 to 10 mpg. compression test were good a few years ago--I have tryed all the easy methods I think to free valves (additives of a large variety with some good results for short periods of time then valves start sticking again)

Do you have a repair manual (Ford , Chilton, etc)?

Yes- a chilton truck and van - a huge book with all needed info but not saying if I need to pull the engine or if I can pull the heads without pulling the motor or how hard it will be. I have experience on a 73 mustang- 66 ford truck etc but never on a van type with little or no room to work with. Is it possible to take heads off with out removing the engine? I have the dog house off and it looks like I can get to most of it from there--are ther any trick or hiding problems I need to be aware of? Thank you.

You can remove the heads on a 460 when in the E series van chassis.
It is a pain in the arse but it can be done with out removing the engine.

I helps to be a contortionist as your hands and arms will have to be used pretty creatively.

I'll second that! I've done FAR too much van work over the years. You might want to buy some stock in Band-Aid too lol.

Is this a van or a 1-ton pickup? Not hard on a pickup (other hard on your back). Never heard of a 5th-wheel hauler Van.

Though not commom they are out there. I have seen several in my area. Custom deals.

Thank you--I now will attack--I am good at working in tight spaces--just needed to know it is possible--I was afraid I would be removing say bolt number 8 and it won't clear the side wall or something like that. I will be back if I run into any snags--thanks again for your reply and time.

I have not seen many my self--it's a Econololine 350 Cabriolet Constaine Michigan--the cab forward is van like--behind cab is all different having a very large sleeping area or fold it up and you have a dining table to eat on or play cards or what ever with screen sliding windows --curtains like a small apartment with plush velvet upolstery--further back is the truck bed--fifth wheel rig for hauling--I hauled a 40 footer up from sea level to to 4

I did head gaskets once on a Van were I could not pull one head bolt out due to clearenace but I could pull it up enough to clear the block - so I had to pull the bolt up like 3 inches and use electrical tape to hold it up while I slid the head out. (And reverse procedure to install).

Exactly what I was fearing--thanks--when you slid the heads out were you able to bring them into the cab area or did you slide them out the front of the truck? have a tricky lower back and the less lifting up and leaning over the better (I will be 70 this sept.) This is not the first time doing major engine work but the first time on a van type--thank you for your input.
Did you remove the carb before taking the intake manifold off or can you leave it on and still be able to take the manifold out the cab area or the front of the truck. I am hoping I can move all the heavy parts out and into the cab area as that way sliding parts off and on will be much easier on the (old) back of mine?? I do have some younger parterers that will help if I ask but I like doing all my own work if possible and I love the challenge and cheating the pros--I recently asked a pro how much he wanted to rebuild my 460 and he said anywhere between 3,000 and up--that was a drive it in and then drive it home. I don't think I need a complete rebuild--just a head job I hope! Compression test a few years ago were very good--I think all I need to do is remove all the dirty FORD carbon off the heads and re-seat and clean the valves--combustion chambers etc. Mabe while I have the heads off I will do a piston soak (mmo). All suggestions and tips etc. are more than welcome--like putting tape on the head bolts to hole them in place is great--many times the simple fix will exscape me and it is great to hear how it can be done and you go--oh yea--why did I not think of that!!!

I've pulled/installed heads on a couple c-class motorhomes and can tell you it's alot easier if with one person inside the dog house and a helper under the hood. I think you'll be surprised it's not as bad a job as it looks. Pull the heads through the cab.

Thank you Russ--I wanted to hear that--my neighbor will help --also he is an x ford mec. Looks like with all the help from you all and my BIG manuel --and some extra hands the job is going to be just fine---later all--thanks--Bob here.
