Default HP vs TQ???

Which is the most important to et??? HP or TQ?

How much of both would it take to get a streetable 3300lb(w/dvr) fox body to the high tens on motor?

I guess my 460 will make 525+- hp but I have no idea on torque. It is a 10 to 1 460, ported Victor Jr. and RPM heads, Comp Xtreme hyd flat cam and 950HP carb.

What is your take guys?

HP or torque? both, HP is a function of torque and RPM (HP=TxRPM/5250) T=HPx5250/RPM
if you do the math torque is at 460ft-lbs at 6,000 RPM. Some have said some strange things like torque is what pulls you thru the stripe. How can that be said when they both contribute.

I'm sure cost and manufacturing has nothing to do with what they put in our cars. I wish hp and tq were the only things that were used to pick engines to put in cars.

Its all relative when it comes to engines. If it wasnt, a 350 hp small block would perform like a 350hp big block. And we all know they dont. Compare those to a 350hp 3406 Cat and there is no comparison. Throw in a 350hp Screamin Jimmy 2 stroke and even the diesels dont respond the same. Thats where the difference in torque shows.

Horsepower is only torque times rpm. A good way to think of it is imagine a single cylinder engine firing once a second & making a particular amount of torque (just rotating force). Now imagine you increase speed to twice a second - it still delivers the same thump but twice as often. So when they say these Formula One engines make 800hp from 2.5 litres, I'm not that impressed - its because they are doing 18,000rpm. They don't make much torque!

Until you multiply the torque with the gears in a driveline that's set up for 18,000 rpm.

Whats the saying "RPM is your friend"

Most important is car set up, chassis and rear end. No use in having any power, if you can't put it to the ground.

I was once told a good and easy way to look at the difference in tq and Hp is this.

Hp is like water in a river, tq is the current.

Tq wins races, its literally what moves you or pulls you, Hp is wat keeps you going!

In response to diesel engines in cars, some sick @SS disel dragsters I'm cars that
Put so much tq down they are like rockets. Diesel motors at tq kings!

HP is ALL that matters. HP is WORK. Torque is nothing more than a twisting force. Take your torque wrench, set it to 100 ft lbs and tighten up a bolt. You can hold it there all day and you are doing NOTHING

If you had a variable gearbox that keep the engine at peak HP RPM going down the 1/4 mile you would get the lowest ET possible regardless of what RPM that peak HP would be made at. Problem is having the right gearing to get and keep the engine in the power band.

whoever told you about water / river got it a$$ backwards

HP is time , the less time to get to the flag or light wins

like to look at it this way....

Torque is the force the engine creates that can be used, Horsepower is how fast the engine can use it......
