Default Best cam company?

Looking for a cam for my new build. Is any company any better than the rest? I used Crane years ago, and always had good luck, but some say they go flat easy. I'm going to use a solid lifter in this one, thinking Comp Cams this time, up to .600 lift, 10.5 compression, pump gas... Lunati seems popular too. I just don't want a cheaper cam and have problems with it. Any suggestions?

Yes, here's a suggestion...get a custom cam from a sponsor of this or the other BBF site.

Randy Malik
Paul Kane
Lem Evans
Scotty J
Carl

Etc.

Barely more expensive and will suit your combo much better.

Already bought the pistons from Carl, ordering rods from him this weekend, I guess I'll bug him about a cam too.

I would highly recommend not going flat tappet.

I am sure that any of them can probably supply you with whatever you need if you get it custom ground for exactly YOUR application.

Catalog shelf grinds tend to be quite the compromise in order to be able to work half way decent with a lot of combinations.

People dont like them due to the wiping lobes problem. I just recently had a flat tappet cam wipe 2 lobes after it was already broke in using brad penn oils with zddp. I am personally making the switch myself to a roller cam. Not sure if im going hydraulic or solid quite yet. Word that a few people have pread is that hydraulic roller in a bbf gives a horrible push rod angle. Im not sure though cause I havent installed one yet.

In no way am I saying that flat tappet cams are bad, I just didnt have good luck with mine, and thats all I can speak for is what I have owned.

Yes, custom for sure. And, nothing wrong with flat tappet, if you break them in correctly and use good oil, no worries.

I think break-in and proper spring setup is just as important if not more, than materials or manufacturer. I know of more than a few hyd/solids, that have run a long time, with more aggressive lobes than what you're talking about.

Not completely no worries. I had one just recently check out on me. Took out 2 lobes and everything was broke in as advised.

One thing I always keep In mind is, anything that is mechanical a.k.a moving, they will fail at one time or another. Roller lifters will also fail but with the benifit of more power depending application and no break in period. Cost is a down fall though.

This is your OPINION and you certainly ARE entitled to it however, I have not had any problems with a flat tappet camshaft in a big block Ford unless the lifter bores of that particular block have some kind of problem.

I can say the same thing for other engines as well. Breaking-in a cam & lifter set can certainly be a pain but, most people want to take short cuts because of it being labor and time consuming when done correctly.

All I was trying to express to people that think roller cams dont fail and is the best choice is that everything will give out at some point in time.

I dont know what happened with mine. Lifters moved freely in their bores, broke in with only outer spring, used high zddp, ran it for over 25min vairing from 2200-2500rpms, never ran hot, ect... car ran and drove fine. Then one day I changed a few thing on the carb, ran it for a bit and it started to act up.

What opinion of mine did you disagree with? I just want to make sure what I mean to say and how people interpret it are the same.
