thinking about switching to mech flat tappet

been doing alot of reading about people wiping out thier solid roller cams and of course then the engine, i currently have the comp cams xr292r installed in my 557 but am considering switching to a regular solid, and am looking for advice as far as choices for my application build is as follows

557
4.5 stroke
6.8 rods
venolia pistons
going to go with the updated BT heads probally for a 11:1
victor intake with a 1000 cfm carb

looking for a power rang of around 3000-7000 rpm
needs to move a 3700 lb galaxie with a 4 speed
would like it to sound pretty lopey if thats a word :?:
i've heard the lunati voodo is good for it but i haven't been able to find any specs.

the comp cam has only been installed and never started so i will probally be looking to sell shortly i would have to clean all the lube off of course, the more i read about solid rollers and there lifter issues the more i'm thinking i don'tr need one for a street/strip engine plus i can't really afford to build this engine multiple times

You sure thats not backwards? I haven't heard of any rollers getting wiped but I have heard of lots of flat tapets getting wiped. THe only thing you need to be aware of with a solid roller is springs, those cams will work a spring to death pretty fast.

sorry about that i meant lifter issues, wondering if i'm heading down the right road as far as cam selection for a street/strip engine i was considering the crane pro-series lifter but the more i read the more i think i'll probally go with the crower hippo series if i decide to keep this cam

how long will the valvesprings last on that cam? Im considering the same thing,Lifter Issues PLUS Valvespring life has me seriously reconsidering my solid roller decision. And Crower solid lifters are expensive,might as well go with a hydraulic roller cam.

The solid cams, both flat and roller, will make the most overall power and there are profiles/combos that have the potential to last on the street.

As much crap get as the juice rollers get, I am still content to have one in my street 521...set it and forget it...over 15,000 miles and have yet to turn a v/c bolt.

juiced rollers meaning the pressure fed ones? considering the crowers myself the hippo series

THink he means hydraulic rollers. Hey Rick, tell us about the cam your using and if you had any installation issued with it (i.e. grinding on pushrod holes or having to use smaller push rods because of geometry isues). Any dyno info?

no issues because only the shortblock is built right now, i'm panning on building the heads around the cam, ted fisher at engine systems has done all my work so i will probally use him for the heads to but i want to accomidate my spring, retainer and rockerarms around the cam so i don't have any issues cam is the comp cams xr-292r 254,260 duration @.050 .671, .678 on the lift with 110 on the lobe seperation, cam has not been degreed yet so i don't have that info.

I decided on a solid flat tappet over a roller for the exact reasons you are talking about. It kinda seems like once you make it past the break in period with a FT and keep good oil in it, the FT's are pretty much worry free. I couldn't bring myself to spend the extra $$$$ and then have those thoughts of roller lifters coming apart lurking in the back of my head all the time. LOL

If you go solid FT be sure to use the ones with the oil hole option in the face. Morel's are available through Lem Evans.

I run a fairly small 236/244 612/612 Ultradyne hyd. roller, 3/8 pushrods, E-brocks no clearance issues. The car recently dynoed 464 at 5,800/478 at 4,200 through the C-6 at the rears after some 'tweaking'.

rest of my combo as in the top end or as far as valve train, if its valve train i havent purchased as of yet but the bottom end is

D1VE +.080
SCAT 4.5 crank
SCAT 6.8 rods
venolia forged pistons for 11:1 cr
going to be BT heads with ford exhaust port for header reasons,ported and polished
victor intake
hp 1000 carb

going in a galaxie with a jerico DR4 trans

Mostly street driven 10.5:1 521 in my big galaxie, keeping it all under the hood...RPM manifold/1000cfm HP annular and 1-7/8" Super Comps. I am thinking I may go bigger on the cam someday.

Keep in mind, Ultradyne is no longer in business, but Comp and Crane have some good grinds if you decide to go with a juice roller.

63boxtop, that car is awesome! I love those teardrop hoods.
