Best way to remove old head gaskets

What is the best way to clean the old head gasket from the heads and the block? Break cleaner, scotch brite and patience?

I start with an old school gasket scraper and finish up with a new/flat coarse wet stone and mineral spirits. The wet stone also works on exhaust ports and exhaust manifolds, or any gasket surface.
