Hello guys I need some help with my 1969 Thunderbird. Okay so car has a 460 in it now and I am putting in a new MSD ignition system. Distributor, wires and coil. A few questions though. What should my timin be set at? Right now the car is hard to start and I was told I have too much advance. Do I need the in line resistor? Or can I just run without it? I have a timing light and I cleaned off the timing marks so I am about to get started, but some helpful tips or whatever would be much appreciated. Engine is D9TE-AB block casting. I am assuming everything on it is pretty much from whatever they pulled it from. Aside from the distributor which was still points. I didn’t however see a resistor on the positive line. Could it be somewhere else? Oh and the carb is a Holley 650.
Don't know about TBirds but on Mustangs the resistor wire runes behind the dash (the resistor part of it)then out to to the engine bay - the resistor wire is pink.
I'm running a blaster 3 and until I put a full 12 volt on the coil via a relay off the run wire for the ignition it would not run properly.
MSD told me to leave the resistor wire in the loop on my Galaxie (?) and it's been running good for 20 years. I forgot which wire it is but I had to add the resistor at the external regulator because the engine continues run after turning the key off without it.
Any MSD setup I have used worked with the resister.I would say that if it doesn't,something is wrong with the resister connection. To the OP......The pink wire to the coil IS the resistor.
