Freshing Up The Top Loader with Paint, Gaskets, and Seals

My piston ring set didn't come today, so I thought I'd mess around with the Top Loader trans I'll be putting in the Fairlane with the new 521 stroker. I test fit the older Lakewood bellhousing I bought off a member here, and checked the fitment of the TO bearing and clutch fork. I had to "manipulate" the fork opening some to clear, but I didn't mind since it was opened up wider when I bought it. I'll be running a hydraulic clutch setup, with a slave cylinder mounted ahead of the fork. I'm going to have to cut the fork, and make up a new pivot point for the slave cylinder rod. That will be the fun part. I have to do this, because the fork won't clear my headers as is. Anyway, I wired brushed the loose stuff, degreased it, and sprayed some cast iron paint on it. I have all new seals and gaskets to put it too. The insides were rebuilt a long time ago, and it was shifting smoothly when I took it out of my old 70 Torino Cobra about 10 years ago. It's the big spline in/out, close ratio. It's going to be nice grabbing the gears again. 8)

hey pat have you thought about a hyd throw out bearing?it replaces the bearing retainer and would eliminate the fork and pivot making it easier on you,no header interference whatsoever,they make them for the big input like you have.

I thought about that John, but I wanted to keep the hydraulics outside the bellhousing. I've heard many pros/cons with the hydraulic throwout bearings, and decided to go with the tried and true stock style TO bearing/steel clutch fork. Here's a great idea I found off the Cobra sites, but I'll cut down my steel fork and modify the end to mount the slave cylinder. It will tuck in nicely along the bellhousing, and I'll have more than enough clearance from the #8 header tube. 8)

thats kool ,i was just throwin it out there.
thats looks like a nice compact setup,i was thinkin it would be bulkier.

I would love a top loader in my car but buying all that McCleod stuff new is way outta my price range.

Definitely appreciate this thread. Every bit of information is helpful for me to plan out the toploader installation behind my 460. Anyhow, that trans looks good. I bet you'll have some fun when you get it in!

Bolted and torqued everything back together again, and she sure looks good. I even put in a new tailshaft bushing. 8)













A new trans mount and plug....





I'll make a new post when I do the hydraulic setup on the bellhousing. 8)

Pat That looks great! If you ever need the special tools to pull the brgs off the input or output shaft let me know I have the special tool kit for this trans! I used to work for a Ford dealer. They stopped using it years ago and gave it too me.
