Engine swap questions?

Hey ya'll! Newb guy here and just finding this forum. Looks like this could be THE Ford colledge of big block knowledge. I wasn't sure where to post my questions so I came to the "misc" forum.

Can anyone tell me what all would be involved in taking a 460/C6 ambulance engine and tranny and transplanting it to a 1989 F250?

The F250 has the 4 speed electronic trans with the lock up torque convertor that absolutely insists on giving me the gear that I most do not want. Being electronic, there's no "kit" for it. The old EFI 351 Windsor finally threw in the towel after almost 300k miles. So I have this stock but brand new 460 and C6 and I just thought that I'd put the BBF and C6 in the pick-up truck.

Any input would certainly be appreciated very much.

BTW, here are some differences:

The 460 is from a 1978 Ambulance. It's carburated.
The 351 Windsor is EFI

WOW, all the way through the work week already and not a single answer!

Did I ask too difficult a question?

Did I ask a question so easy that any good Ford guy wouldn't have to ask?

Did I put it in the wrong forum?

Are ya'll mad at me? lol :P

Help?

460 into 80's Truck

I am not a truck guy but I also know that there are guys here that have 460 motors in their trucks of your vintage. What you are wanting to do will require different engine mounts as a minimum. Obviously you will need headers/exhaust and a different fuel supply system for the carb setup. All of the accesorry brackets on the front of the engine are different as well. The ford truck forum may have posts from companies that make conversion kits where you can buy everything to do the swap. It looks like you are gonna stay with carburation because the 460 is set-up that way. Is the tans a C6? If not find out what it is a ZF maybe...
Your best answers will come from the Ford truck forum on this issue.

Be carefull most of the people on this site have forgotten more than you and I will ever know.

Hi Dave,

Hi Dave, I have never done this swap, but I believe the 460 was a factory option in your truck. Everything you need should be available using OEM stuff. I would look for a wrecked one to get all the mounts, brackets, etc.

Where's my beer and that half inch wrench?

I agree with cletus66, that you should be able to find all the oem items for the engine swap. I don't know about the c6 swap. The drive shaft length may be different, linkage may be different, (if so you can install a cable shifter) also I am assuming that your F-250 is 2wd, if not then you will have a problem on the c6 tail shaft.
My truck that has a 385 engine in it is a 1977 F-150 4X4 that I race, I made all of the mounts.
I have a 89 that I bought to put a 460 in, but never went through with it, so keep us posted as how it goes.

David,

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
