E4OD problems

Our 95 F-350 7.3PS car hauler has an E40D in it, but when it has a load on it, It will usually miss 2nd gear and sit at the limiter for a while until it goes directly into 3rd along with TC lockup. We rebuilt the trans over the winter and replaced all clutches and bands, along with a shift kit. It works okay when there is no load on it but will not hold with a load. We load dads truck on the bed and tow mine on a trailer, so thats around 11-12,000# to tow. Any Ideas??

sounds like the intermediate clutch slipping, whatr shift kit did you use and is the 7.3 stock?

we believe its a trans-go, but don't know the number, because the mechanic who put it in threw out the paperwork :roll: We believe the 7.3 is stock, but not sure. its got 280k on it. If it had a chip or something, where would we look? It seems to get up and go pretty good to me, but don't know if its quicker than normal or not :lol:

You can try shifting it manualy to see if 2nd holds, if so most assured the int clutch is smoked. The transgo kits are basicly the same the hd2 and tugger will be the better ones to use mainly the tugger for your application. I do like to build the accumulators with some other mods besides the transgo, but again ts a pretty good kit. Before it slipped how'd the shifts feel? they should have been quick and firm. If the truck has a power programmer there is realy no way to tell for the average joe, if it has an old school chip, pull the parking brake assy and look at the back of the pcm, if its there you'll see it, otherwise there should be a black plastic cover on the back of the pcm, about 1" x 3".

Its had about 200 miles put on it since the rebuild and it hasn't slipped too many times in those miles. Most of the shifts feel pretty good. Only one that has any problems is second gear. alot of the time with the truck unloaded it will grab pretty good and sometimes not. Before it started slipping at all last year, it shifted perfect in every gear, just last year they weren't quite as firm/quick as they are now.

yeah, try m2, I bet there is something wrong with the int clutch. The 95 models had a lot of sub-par stuff in them, but it sounds like he bungled it somehow.

Jon,,do you think that the int clutch pack could be installed upside down?I've seen it happen on a couple tranys,,also the 2nd accumulator valve could be sticking?

valve could stick, if he did the transgo it addresses this problem. You could not really install the pack bacwards, it just wont stack up right. He could have installed a lip seal backwards, many possibilities.

Jon,,I've seen where they put the thin steels in first with the thick pressure plate on top and then the thin steels spin in the case because there is a groove in the bottom where the thck pressure plate is suppose to go,,I agree the the steel accumulator regulator valves usually fix the sticking problem.

if they did that the friction would fall off the spline on the int sprag outer race. Could be done but a blind man could get it right. I would verify the m2 will hold second, if it does pull the pan bet ya got burnt friction in it.Here is a link to a build I did for a idi diesel guy, this build will hold a bunch of power. page 4 at the bottom will show the int clutch pack.
