How could we add lead to our unleaded gas ?

I'm guessing this is just another one of my brain farts, but there must be a way to add our own lead content to our fuel right.
If there was a way to render down some lead, and form it into liquid form.then we could add whatever is needed to increase the CR to a decent level without detonation problems.
I know it wouldn't be legal and all,but I was just wondering if it is even possible to do. If so how would one go about it.
Ideas anyone ?
Thanks Steve

I have about 10- 15 gallons of tetraethyl lead. I just mix it up to the octane rating I want . Works great

Hi Po Falcon, where's a guy look for that tetraethyl lead, and what is it's intended purpose other than that?
I started thinking about this idea because of all the useless old batteries around that are good for nothing, except their lead.

Bought mine from a company in Utah I believe. It was the additive to make Leaded Gasoline. You may not remember that stuff lol. Gas neede d lead to cushion the valves on their seats. There was Regular and Ethyl , with Ethyl being the best gas.

So on a full tank of gas how much of that additive do you actually add?
I was thinking if it were that concentated,it would be very little.
Also I wouldn't have a clue where to look aound here where I live.
Thanks

Ethyl Corp

Ethyl Corporation manufactures most octane additives, including the kind you're talking about.

http://www.ethyl.com/index.htm

A few years back, I did a bunch of fuel additive research in order to push the pump gas envelope in a certain classification of racing. Yes, cheating.

Anyway, my studies lead me to this company. I obtained a fuel test kit from them, as well as samples of most common (and some uncommon) gasoline octane additives and washing agents. I came up with some fuel doping solutions that did not show on the test, and therefore were not deemed illegal, but added about 7% at the rear wheels anyway.

I also learned a great deal about MMT, Lead, and other additives in the process. My personal favorite is MMT...that stuff does wonders for detonation tolerance. If you're not running catalytic converters or oxygen sensors, try it. It'll turn your plugs reddish/brown, but is harmless. Torco makes a MMT laced product called "Torco Unleaded Accelerator" that is nothing short of a miracle for power adder cars.

Byron thank you for that information.
Hi PO Falcon, thanks again for your info.
Now this just gives me more to think about, and with your information I even have a direct source to dig deeper.
Depending on how easy I can get my hands on some of this stuff, and for how much,I still like the idea of running higher compression.

That company sells in gallons, but I bought a drum. FYI , the drum shipped hazardous. Freight was a bear. Rick

Open up the fuel cap, grab a stick of solder, melt the solder with an oxy torch until the molten solder runs into the fuel tank.
Instant leaded additive to your fuel. LOL!

I have seen the lead additive at wal mart and some stores like Auto Zone and Parts Plus small bottle, they say that one teaspoon will treat a full tank of gas. But I would add it to what the manufacture says.

I think I would be extremely cautions to mess with any sort of tetra ethyl lead. That stuff is very poisonous and I've heard it can kill you if you dump it on your skin...

Not cool.. Maybe the better approach would be to buy 5 gallons of leaded race fuel and add some of that to your unleaded premium.

Well I'v been reading up about it on the net.
Yes very dangerous stuff, most of all the making of it.
I did find it funny however that some countries still produce it,and use it.
They are still in the lead phase out.
1970galaxie, good idea! but not sure if that would be safe.
I still would like to know how the lead is actually added to the gas.

Back when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, and the rules read "Service station pump gasoline as available to the general public" and Chevron "white pump was $.369 @ aprox. 104 octane, detonation was killin us. Like 60 to 80 pistons a year. The class record holder, a friend, moved up to "Top Fuel" and told me about "THE STUFF". I went down to the Ethyl distributor and bought a gallon of "Combustion Improver #2". Mixed 1cc. per gallon with ANY premium leaded gas....it would NOT detonate, AND passed NHRA fuel check at the INDY nationals....back then. As mentioned above, it's a deadly poison and you've got to have the jeting right BEFORE you use it 'cause the plugs will be unreadably brown with it. We only went slightly quicker with it but the savings in pistons was dramatic.
PS, works wonders in 2 strokes.
