The mysterious morel mushroom

I do appreciate it.These are what my wife and I have in the fridge, also about that many in mom's fridge, and we have eaten about that many.
I have been finding them ever since I got home from the BASH.Most are getting pretty old and would be dried up if not for the rain we have been getting.
I also am in Iowa.

I tried those morels for the first time just last fall.Pretty expensive too.
We have about 1/2 a pound of dried shrooms left.Just soak them in water well, then they plump up again. Best mushrooms Ive ever had.

False morels

You are correct. There are mushrooms that are called false morels that are poisonous.Look similiar to these but are not attached at the base of the cap.I caught a guy trespassing on my property a couple of years ago and all he had in his bag were the poisonous ones and he didn't know the difference.I did set him straight, about the mushrooms and about not having permission. Every year I have to kick people off our place during deer season and mushroom season.I guess we live to close to the big city.
Probably will fry up a skillet tonite.Morels have more flavor than portabellas. We have tryed them prepared all different ways, but always go back to dipping them in flour and frying them in butter.

Shrooms?

About the only mushrooms we have down here are toadstools. But this conversation reminded me that the Poke Salad has started growing down in the bottoms, so I need to go pick some before it gets too big.
I see that we all enjoy our special meals.

Poke

Poke is a plant that tends to grow in sandy moist areas. You try to pick the leaves whenthey are tender and then par boil it and pour off the juice, then boil it again (this is to remove the poison).
Then you stir fry it in bacon grease. If there is any left from supper you can scramble it with eggs for breakfast.
Some folks pickle the stems, but I don't care for them much.

Do ya'll batter the mushrooms like okra when you fry them, or is it more of a stir fry?

My uncle always comes down from Des Moines to the farm here (south of Des Moines) to get morels. This year wasn't so good, but last year he nearly filled up a medium sized cooler. I don't mind them, but I'm not a huge fan of them so I don't look for them other than a few glances around when I'm fixing fence in the spring. We just fry them in butter without any flour.
