Im new Here, a few 460 block questions

Hi everyone I'm new here and had a few questions. I'v been a 351w stroker guy for the last 10 years, infact thats all I have built, I put a blown Windsor in a 71 datsun which ran 10's and a few years ago put a 408W in a suzuki samurai which ran 9's in the quarter. My goal now is to get into the 8's in the quarter. This is my first Bigblock build ever. I just bought a 1991 mercury Capri for my conversion and im estimating a total weight of 2100 - 2300 with me in it. So my question is how strong are the D1VE blocks. Im going to need somewhere in the 850HP range to get into the 8's so can a stock D1VE handle this kind of power? Do you guys usually use main girdles on bigblocks? Also because the car is fairly light, can i get by with a scat cast steel crank?

Ben

thanks in advance

Brian the BBF has no need for a main girdle they don't have the weak blocks like the small blocks do and yes the D1 block is a good starting point for your build. if you will browse the engine build section you will see lots of the stock blocks can handle 850+ hp and many have.

Ben,

Welcome to the BBF Forum!

91 Capri? I thought the last year for the Capri was '86?

Like Randy said, read through several of the engine builds and you will get some ideas of what you will need to reach your goal

Good Luck!

Cool, Im starting to like big blocks already...

Basically the bottom end just needs studs and a line hone and im good to go.

How about the crank issue? Im thinking about either a scat cast or hawks forged

Oh.. your thinking of the wrong car, im talking about those 3rd generation little convertable mercurys with 1.4Liters. They look like the mazda miata's, here a link to what it looks like

gotcha!! That should be interesting, like putting a 1000CC Suzuki engine on a go cart

If you want a steel crank, Call Adney Brown at Performance Crankshafts Inc. The cheapie Hawks crank may be cheaper, BUT you get what you pay for IMO!

The trick is just to put the radiator in the tailgate .. Notice the 5 lug spindles all the way around, What I did was mill down the suzuki samurai spindles so that crown victoria hubs would slide on then ran a milled down tailer axle bolt through where the 4x4 part used to be to hold it all together, slapped on some eldorado calipers and it was complete.

Wow, I used to be a Samurai guy, my most involved swap used a 4.3 v6 and 200r4 tranny, with narrowed Toyota axles.

Very nice, and I bet a a fun ride.

do some searches and you will find alot of different opinions and you will see 1300 plus horse power on those hawks 4340 cranks. 2 bolt mains have a tendancy to walk around with high hp the girdle can help, sure as hell wont hurt performance.
