Rear gear ratio ?

I have a ? about how much gear ratio is too much? I have always heard stay away from things as low as 3.89 and 4.10 on the street. I know that they were factory options in some drag pack cars which were mostly behind toploaders and trucks with tall tires or towing duty. However I do not want to make the engine work extremely hard all the time.
The reason I ask is that I just missed an opportunity to pick up a complete 9 3/8" trac-loc set up with some low gears on the cheap, I hesitated because they were 4.56. I am sure that they came out of a truck with a tall tire.
I have one of those large 9 3/8" pinion rear end under my Galaxie and currently have a 3.00 open in it and have picked up a good 3.50 trac-loc unit to drop in.
The 9 3/8" stuff is not supported much and I should have just bought it for the parts but I was not thinking straight, but I would like to know for future reference.

The vehicle is/will be 66 Galaxie with a mild 466 with a c-6 ~2500 stall and 26" tires, the car will be street driven and taken on the expressway with the ocassional 40 minute commute to work.

How big of a difference in RPM's would 3.50 gears at 60mph vs 4.56 gears?

Terry

Trans gear

Thanks for the link Jeff, that will be helpful. I do not know what the trans gear should be though. Any ideas what it should have in it?

Thanks again

c6 3rd gear ratio is 1.00.according to ur specs:4.56=67.85 mph at 4000 rpm. 3:50=66.3 at 3000 rpm.about 1000 rpm differense.you could use the wide ratio gearset to help takeoff.
GEAR C-6 STOCK LOW GEAR- E4OD PERCENT CHANGE
1 ST 2.46 2.71 -11
2 ND 1.46 1.53 -5
3 RD 1.00 1.00 0
