O/T Big Rig PM Procedures

Anyone have any charts showing the pm procedures/mileage recommendations for big trucks? I'm considering bidding on a contract for pm/tire service on a fleet of trucks. I'm trying to look at several different procedures and fine-tune one into a competitvely priced service....thanks, Rick

Rick,
All trucks usually come with a operator and/or maintenance manual. You'll have to get one for each different model as different engine, trans,
axle combo will use different schedules, fluids and adjustments.
The manuals will have the info your looking for and you'll be able to put a proper maintenance schedule and not jeapordise your self.
I'm a mechanic for a recycling company with 25 on highway class 7 and 8 trucks and 20 pieces of heavy equipment plus another 10 pieces of industry specific equipment. We follow the manuals schedules exactly and we do oil analysis on it all. If we have any warranty issues with any dealers we have the documentation to back us up..

right now, I just need a generic outline for a basic pm schedule. After I submit that, we can fine tune it to the specific truck requirements

It depends on the engine that is in the truck.

For a small bore engine 9.0L and below 5000 miles

large bore 10.0L and above 8-10,000. We have some driver's that go 12,000.

The reason for the lower mileage for the small bores is they are in a lot of stop and go traffic and they may use a HUEI injection system.

What is includes parts wise is oil, oil filter, fuel filters, and a oil and coolant analysis kit.

then make up a check list of stuff you check:

1) lights
2) wipers
3) trans fluid
4) grease the chassis (depending on the truck could have up to 50 grease fittings)
5) power steering fluid
6) tires
7) belts and hoses
8 ) brakes (visual inspection)
9) rear ends fluids
10) wiper solvent
11) air filter minder
12) parking brake
13) front suspension
14) rear suspension
15) steering linkage
16) drive line
17) instrument lights
18 ) fuel lines and tanks for leaks

Then have a spot for a general condition of the truck

On top of the form have stuff like:
1) name
2) make/model/year
3) engine manufacture
4) engine ID number (like with a CAT C15 the engine number could be MXS98765)
4) unit number
5) mileage
6) VIN

might want to check those mileages, the company I drive for goes 18,000 miles on oil changes, the grocery store warehouse here in town goes to 40k miles. some even as high as 50k (I really don't recommend that) when I was an O/O I went 15/18,000
Now our truck goes in tomorrow for a PM and I might be able to get you the reciept showing all that was done on our fleet procedure requirements if you want it. I do know that we are now doing OA everytime and that might be something you might look into as a possible hook/sales point especially if you can find one of the portable machines for doing it. or setup a good deal through someone like blackstone labs.

When I was layed off after 9-11 I had a job servicing trucks.There was always something that needed fixing on every service.It took about 4 hours to do complete a service if no major problems were found

Rick,
I found a checklist from a trucking company who's trucks we use to service. I tryed scanning it to e mail but the print is small and not very clear. If you want I'll mail you a copy to your shop, just pm an address.
This checklist was from St Johnsbury trucking co. I think we got like
5 hrs labor for a A PM. We used to do Yellow Frieght also, 8 hrs for their
PM but they had a computer print out checklist that we used to hang on the hood after it was tilted and it would touch the floor.
