1977 Lincoln power steering "SKID CONTROL"???????

A friend of mine has a 77 lincoln with a power steering leak. No big deal ....I found the line that's leaking. Well I called the local parts store and they asked me if it has "SKID CONTROL" He did'nt know what that was and for some reason I don't think it has to do with anti-lock brakes.

Does anyone know what "SKID CONTROL" is and how do I know if this car has it?

Any help would be great
Aaron

I don't know about the Lincoln, but a 76 Grand Marquis that I snagged the 9" out of had the skid control (anti-lock rear brakes) that used the power steering pump for the hydraulic control.

One quick way to determine if it has skid control or not, is to check if there are wires going to the front of the differential. On the skid control there is a "generator" on the front of the differential that builds a voltage anytime the tires are moving. If the rear brakes lock, the voltage collapses and the solenoid it was controlling at the power steering valve changes and releases the rear brakes; sort of a "mechanical" anti-lock system.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, when I seen those wires hooked up to the flange on the 9" of some Lincolns I've owned it really had me stumped. Your brake pedal will have the words "SURE-TRACK-BRAKE" right on the rubber pad, if it has this elecric set-up on the 9".

Look at all the money Henry had,
and he still drove a Ford!

Ive got a 72 Lincoln Mark 4 that had the that "anti skid" deal in it.
xcept, that one was run by vacuum from the intake manifold. The unit
itself looked like a huge air brake cylinder for a semi. It was bolted to the passenger side frame rail, right across from the bell housing. I took it out and now I have more room to run dual exhaust, or headers.
