Tried my hand at a driveshaft hoop

After the last trip to the dyno the torque when on the giggle gas showed breakage was imminent. Spent the past Saturday at a friends shop and with $50 in aluminum we built a driveshaft hoop. Used 3/8" plate for the axle mounts and then 3" X 3/8" aluminum for the sides and 3/8" for the gusseted hoop. We had everything tacked with the hoop following the angle of the driveshaft, somehow during the final welding it ended up almost straight  . The Tig welder kept tripping because of the heat loss in the large chunk of aluminum so it was finished with the Mig. Welded 5/16 nuts to the back of the mounts for ease of bolting on. Now just 4 bolts on the mount and 4 on the u-joint and it can be removed. Gave it a quick buff on the wheel before mounting for some bling  Hopefully it passes tech at the track, it needed to be 6" from the u-joint.

On page 207 of the NHRA rule book, (General Regulations) Drivetrain2 it looks as if you should have placed it within 6 inches of the front U-joint and not the rear one. My Mustang has it in the front..

Laters!

Looking at those tires in the pic.. I dont think NHRA rules will come into play with this buggy. Looks good though.

1990 GT, 347 / 76mm turbo setup OUT AND GONE!

New setup going in. Dove headed 545 with a plate kit to 400, progressive, Th400 etc. etc. etc.

Coupe Devil hit it on the head  , I just want to get through a couple test and tune nights without any grief. Trying to get 35 X 12.5 Baja Claws to hook would be quite a feat. The truck is not really good at any one thing but fun to drive and I've got a 100# of nitrous to go through before putting it away this fall

Not to pee on your corn flakes, but that drive shaft loop is to be installed within 6" of the front U joint, to prevent joint failure from droping the drive shaft on the ground and launching the car like a poll vaulter...... and or jamming a flaling drive shaft through a gas tank, etc.........

My Corn Flakes will be fine  , just means paying for more refreshments to use my friends shop again.
With any luck the running gear gets pulled this winter and put in the SWB frame we've been working on.

It does need to be within 6" of the front joint, but really the rule cannot be put into effect if he does not run slicks.

More or less up to the track, I have seen ours not allow trucks with thoses type of tires to run, so it will either fly or it wont.
