Hood modifications

Anyone got experience to share with cutting the hood to put an air cleaner and headers through? I am planning on going with upright headers and an air cleaner through the hood this winter, and from what I can tell will have to cut most of the X brace out from under the hood so I'm concerned about support. Also will be putting a 4" bolt on scoop on the hood.

You should be able to use a small piece of 1/2" square tubing to stiffen things up if they get flimsy

it will get flimsy to a certian extent but if you don't use stock hinges with springs (if an older F150 type) then your not pulling against those springs which is what buckles hoods.
I personally cut out all the center cross members just leaving the sides and part of the front support. Then removed the hinges and secure it to he body with 4 hood pins and it's not too flimsy at all. Never have had a problem with it that way.

RE

Thanks My concern will be the area for the air cleaner. If I cut slots for the headers that go all the way to the rear (making it easy to remove the hood) then the sheet metal in the center will be flimsy due to no support. I will have a bolt on hood scoop there, so can I bolt in a piece of angle iron underneath to support this area? BTW, I will be removing the hinges so it will have pins.

hood mod

When are you going to do a tilt hood? You still have to cut the notches for the headers and a hole for the air cleaner but it is so much easier working on it. Maybe your rules? This is an old pic. since then I have cut a hole in the hood and installed an old style Cobra Jet hood scoop and am thinking about upright headers. But like you, I am also wondering how flimsey it is going to be cutting through the support at the rear of the hood for the headers.

Make sure and DO NOT weld to the underside of the hood. It can cause you all kinds of problems that is why they use opoxy.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid-in-sideways, totally worn out, shouting.."holy crap.... what a ride!"

Re Tilt hood

Digger,

I would really like to go to a tilt hood, but I'd have to re-do the weight bracket. It is on the to-do list if I can get everything else done and have time to spare.

BTW check your pm's
