Hey e85 buyers, how much?

So the closest I've ever been to E85 was by watching the Dukes of Hazzard and seeing Uncle Jesse do up some moonshine. The closest pump to me is almost 800 miles away.

What do you guys pay for this stuff today? And what does 93 octane gas cost where you are?

I'm wondering if it's crossed that threshold where it's actually cheaper, even with the mileage penalty, to use E85.. or if you built an engine FOR E85.. would it be cheaper to fuel?

I don't believe you are supposed to get better gas mileage, I believe it is just a cheaper alternative to regular gas.

There was an article on msn autos regarding E85. I don't remember the numbers. But, basically, E85 was X% less per gallon than gas. However, they got (X+Y)% less mileage per gallon. In other words, they got fewer miles per dollar. I can't say what they did was accurate.

About 2.30 a gal in the central USA, and YES you will get worse mileage. If you get about 22 mpg, you'll need to get about 16 on E85 to break even, which should be easily done. If your car is E85 compatible, it will change computer settings to take fullest advantage of the ethanol and give you closer to [normal] mileage. Sorry haven't used it yet!

I posted this on another thread, but I will post it again. I am trying some mixing, my work car is a 99 Sable, I have had it since 99, it has 138000 or so miles on it, it has always pinged some on regular, so we always ran mid-grade in it. Last week I decided to mix E85 and regular to up the octane at a cheaper cost and see what happens. I put 4 gallons of E85 and 8 gallons of regular in it. The car would bust 30mpg on the hwy and 25-26 all around (going to work and back) on mid grade. After my first tank ( I am now on my second) I got 26mpg going to work and back (I hope to check the hwy mileage some time soon) and the car runs as good as it did 9 years ago. I have no idea what the long term effect will be, but for now I plan on continuing with this procedure.

IIRC E85 is approximately 110 octane. That's where the real advantage is. Yeah it has fewer BTU per gallon, year you'll get worse MPG, sure you need to change your fuel line and carb tune, but you can run higher compression for more power.

We don't have it here in NJ, and the enviro-nazi's took our 94 octane so we're stuck with piss 93 now. Oh well.

About $2.50/gal here in NE. I do what David did and blended my own. 50/50 in my work 2500HD with a 6L and no difference in mileage but it gets crap anyway 10-12MPG. I figure it saves about $.20/gal on the price by doing that, or bout $.02/mile. On an average 15k mile per year average that is $300.
