get a 1 foot sample of each... light em on fire.

You want molten poly styrene raining on you as you try to stop the car and get out, or would you rather deal with the car??????

Ya get what you pay for.

The compressibility/density is also different between the SFI legal stuff & the cheap stuff.

I just put Jaz 1/2" SFI on the cage in my new dragster. It's fits well. Just as an FYI, the Summit house brand IS Jaz. It even has the Jaz label on the underside. As mentioned it is cheaper.

A tip or two: The SFI stuff is stiffer. Use a hairdryer to heat it before bending or do like I do and lay it on the dash of your truck in the sun for an hour or so with the windows up.

Also, regardless of brand the velcro on the backside tends to come pull loose from the padding due to weak glue. I pull the velcro up and use my wife's hot glue gun to glue the velcro to the pad.

I am offering up a recent email I recieved from a chassis builder I know, about roll bar padding and head restraints this came from Joe Timney @ Delaware Chassis Works. Check out the link he offeres for roll nar padding lots of different shapes and forms that are SFI approved.

Quote:
May I offer one of the best head restraint systems I have seen to date.
Go to www.ispseats.com. Kris VanGilder is the guy John Force went to
when Meddian got killed to update his fleet of hotrods.

Go the the custom drag head surrounds and look at what he offers. The
one that goes around the side of your head is $325. That includes the
aluminum plate that you mount, return to him and they pad it and install
the covering. This system is SFI 45.2 approved. This is a triple density
foam, soft on the outside to stop the eye shutter from the vibration you
receive when the helmet touches the hard padding.

Donna & I meet with Kris at PRI and We were impressed with Kris's
credentials in seat testing...he did all of the impact testing for
Butler seats for 11 years before going on his own. His custom seats
start about $900, $200 less that Kirkey sells them for...and they are
built for you.

As far as buying the foam to do it yourself, try BSCI.
www.rollbarpadding.com They sell sheets that they will slit to the
thickness you need.

Kris buys all his foam from BSCI.

Kris will be making all of the padding for my new liner.

Sure hope this helps you,
joe
