3.0L ranger surging/sputtering- help!

I have a 2002 ford ranger with a 3.0L and it has 155,000 miles on it. It has ran perfect until yesterday. I drove it to work and it felt fine, but I noticed twice that the "check gauge" light flashed very quickly. It was running fine, so I thought nothing of it. After work I hopped in my truck and it would sputter whenever I bogged the engine down (its a manual tranny). When going down the highway in OD and going up a big hill the engine would bog down a little (thats normal of course), but when it boggs the engine surges or something. I drove it home and again this morning it did the same, so after work I went to the parts house and got new plugs, wires and a new fuel filter. I changed them all and it might have helped a litlle, but its still there. I did notice that the "check gauge" light flashed once during my test drive after replacing the parts. I never have seen a "check engine" light come on. The plugs had a whittish, almost powder on them (lean), but otherwise looked okay. Any ideas? Its obviously not running right, but nothing is causing the check engine light to come on. At at higher rpms or flooring it, it sometimes surges, but generally it runs pretty good.

I don't know if that engine has the coil on plugs (COPS) like my 4.6L Crown Vic, but that's what would happen when one of those went bad. A scan tool will tell you which cylinder is bad, and you can swap it with another cylinder and see if the fault follows that. This applies to injectors and plugs too. Other than that, maybe you have some water in the fuel tank on the last fill up. Right now here in Jersey, it's the beginning of the summer gas change (low RVP), so many terminals are bringing their tanks down very low for truck loading. Jersey was hit hard with a major screw up for LukOil. :roll: 22,000 gallons of water in gas stations from one Terminal. :shock: I hope this helps. 8)

I have one coil bank on the left side of the motor. There is not a coil, seperatly at each injector. If this was the problem would it flag a "check engine" light/code?

I would "think" it would. It could still let you know if an injector or plug is bad. Could also be a bad spark plug wire if you have a coil for the whole bank. You will still get a cylinder misfire code, even though the "check engine" light isn't lit steady. It will show up in the pending trouble codes on a scan tool.

I had one do a similar thing. Is it the Flex Fuel 3.0? My truck had the same thing going on and it turned out to be a peice in the fuel system under the drivers side that meters the fuel if you use ethanol?? No expert, just my experience!! Hope you get it taken care of.

no flex fuel. I going to try a code reader, but I'm not sure if it will show anything.

I may have found it! It died on me today after work. I got it home and kept it running and then unplugged the MAF sensor... no check engine light! The bulb must be burned out :? That explains the no check engine light. I loaned my OBDC scanner to a friend a week ago and he "lost it". He said he will get me one next week I unhooked the battery (to reset the cpu), and replaced the PCV valve. It seems to be working pretty good, but I need to check the codes.
