Recent trend noticed at local drag strips. WTF?

Why is it that the guys who are running their 4 door pickups and late model gtos feel the need to ALWAYS have their hoods up while in the pits?

Is it NOT embarassing enough to be at a MUSCLE CAR event racing a pickup?

Some of these clowns actually drive through the pits with their hoods in the raised position! WHY?

One guy had fabbed up a PVC "cold air intake" for his dodge truck. Sure enough, he also had it wrapped in aluminum foil as well. I am not making this up.

Another guy had a floor box fan laying on top of his engine cover, hood up, fan on HI running off of a generator.

Again, WHY?

I am open to enlightnment by those who are in the know regarding this subject.

reminds me of the time at vmp with my coupe, was standing in the lanes next to my car and a guy w/ a 2005 f150 was next to me. He was removing his air filter. I told a buddy of mine that I could feel the next pass in my car, I was gonna dip into the 9's. the guy with the truck walks over to me and says, "you do know this is a 1/4 mile track don't you?" I lied and told him no, proceeded to line up next to him and rip off a 10.01 to his 17.xx. I drove by him in the pits and he wouldn't even look at me

Maybe they watch too much Pinks?
I had the Maverick at the Bracket Finals earlier this month, drove it out there, raced it Fr, Sat, Sun, and only opened the hood one time in the staging lanes because a guy wanted to know about the a/c-heater box.
I do open the hood on the Mustang, especially when the rounds tighten up to let some of the heat out, or charge the battery.

Boy do I feel like a dummy now.... Took the wife's 5.0 ragtop to the track a couple weeks ago.... And had the hood up in the pits. Dammit! ops:

I ran a blistering 14-second pass and wanted to show off my chrome dip-stick!

Well, from a practical standpoint, newer vehicle ECU's read the heat soaked engine and start pulling timing and pushing fuel and really knock down performance. My '93 Lightning would run great with an iced intake and cold temps, warm it to normal operating temps and it would drop .4sec. So, it's beneficial to pull as much heat as possible out of the engine. If you were to talk to the guys versus looking down your nose at them, perhaps they could give YOU some education.

Just remember, even if you're the hot **** local racer running in the 9's ...you're still just some hobbyist bumpkin compared to the Pro racer making a living at this game. Don't forget that everyone started somewhere.

Just sensing a bunch of sniping and negativity on the board as of late, and frankly, it's annoying to read it day in and day out as I monitor the board. It's a hobby, enjoy it.

Whats wrong with racing a truck? I chose a truck cause..

A. Its different
B. I didn't have the 3 grand to pick up a fox and drop in a 460.

There is a guy here that races a F100 up at Atlanta Dragway, his truck consistently runs low 13s. I know 13 seconds in the 1/4 isn't fast compared to most of the rides on here, but for a truck and to run those times consistently, says something.

I wouldn't drive around with the hood up on my truck, but would have it up when parked. Ill be proud of the work that has gone into this when it is finally running.

But I do agree about racing a 4 door truck....kinda odd.

I race my F250 all the time, I do NOT drive around with the hood up, but I do see it to cool them down as others have stated due to the way an EFI system works.
But I personal was offended by the "Is it NOT embarrassing enough to be at a MUSCLE CAR event racing a pickup? " no what SHOULD be embarrasing is getting beat by that 7200lb flying brick at that event and I DO beat a lot of camaro's the occasional vette, chevelles, and yes a whole LOT of mustangs, Torino's, and about any other "muscle car" so no I ain't embarrassed at all. In fact I have a lot of fun and instead of worrying about what someone else is doing isn't that the idea if your NOT in it to make a living is to have fun??

My thoughts are instead of worrying about what the other guy is doing look at yourself and just do what you feel YOU should do.

X2... I go because I'll probably never be able to make a living at it... I'll race, or at least line it up across from anyone...
