460 conversion

Happy Holidays to all. Hello to all. I need some advise. I have a 1978 F350 dump truck that had a 400 with standard granny gear 4 speed. I have a 1986 460 engine that I am trying to install in it. I have everything figured out and fitting except the original bellhousing from the 400 doesnt give me enough clearance to bolt transmission to bell. The throw out bearing hits the transmission and there is no clearance to slide it. I could make an adapter probable 1/4'' to bolt between the transmission and bellhousing but dont like that idea. Any ideas?

My guess would be that you are using one of the pilot bearings and the shaft splines are running into it. what you need to do is get a pilot bushing for a 390 fe ford and install it, that will sit flush with the end of the crank. The bearings stick out further. I just had this same problem earlier this summer with my pulling truck. Also the flywheel off of the 400 won't work either it needs to be a flywheel off of a 460 or a 390.

What type of pressure plate is it?Is it the borg type {fingers} or diaphram type?I did this swap on a 79 1 ton and the borg type pressure plate was too thick with the thick flywheel i had for the 460 had to use the diaphram tyoe pressure plate.

To make the 400 bell work you either need to use a diaphram pressure plate or make a thicker spacer plate. We use thicker spacers all the time on pulling trucks to make room for double disk clutchs. So it's no problem. Just make sure the pilot shaft is in the bushing.

I am back, sorry for the delay. The original engine was definately a 400. I have removed the pilot bearing and measured all of that and it is fine. I have to use the newer 460 flywheel because it is externally balanced, and the diaphram clutch for the 1986 460. The problem is the transmission is crowded against the clutch arm and throw out bearing. I guess I need to make a spacer plate like puller72 said Thanks for the info.
