Fuel mileage question....

460's have plenty of power.. Lets say you put a VERY mildly built 460 in a 1/2 ton truck 2wd. Behind that maybe a later model e40d and lets go so far to say a Gear vendors behind that.. Would a mild 460 have enough power to pull through 2 od's? What kinda mileage you think someone could squeeze out of one?

1990 GT, 347 / 76mm turbo setup OUT AND GONE!

New setup going in. Dove headed 545 with a plate kit to 400, progressive, Th400 etc. etc. etc.

Not nearly enuff for you, you tight son-of-a-gun. LOL!

Seriously, your gonna have to run a lot of gas thru it to justify the 2-3K your gonna spend on the GV unit. What about a diesel conversion?

Seems like a lot of money laid out to save a couple MPG. Here's my enterprisey solution...

Mild 460, boatload of torque... ZF5 and either 3.08:1 gears or 2.50:1 gears in a 9" for 1.9:1 final drive, and you still would have reasonable performance off the line with the 14.3:1 final drive in 1st and 7.35:1 2nd. This would be about 1500 RPM at 70 MPH with a 29" tire. I'm not sure I'd want to cruise at much lower RPM than that. Any lower at that speed driving a brick might result in lugging, high oil temps, high throttle opening, poor MPG.

An e4od only gives a 6.775:1 first with a 2.5:1 rear, but in double over gives a 1.3884:1 final drive. I think you would have trouble pushing this with only 460 cubes, tough off the line and tough at highway speed. At 70 MPH with a 29" tire this would be turning 1200 RPM, assuming no torque converter slippage.

I think the 8.8 axle only goes down to 3.08, which even with a ZF5 or E4OD wouldn't give the real deep numbers you're considering. But in any event, the point is that an uber deep final drive could be accomplished for significantly less coin than a spendy gear vendors unit. The idea being why spend top coin on a gear vendors when that gear vendors money would buy a lot of gas.

Engine must make good torque down low though

Hey Brad, Ive still got that 9" rear with the 2.47 gears in it. That would surely get the rpm down.

That it would! Im just thinking down the line. WOuld it be easier to swap in a 460 for some more power, or make truck payments on a bigger truck.. probably swap..

78 F100 2wd, 460, mild cam, headers, 750 Holley vac secondaries, stock intake, C6 with a B&M shift kit, stock converter, 3:00 rear diff. 14 mpg in town, 18 mpg hiway and had all the power you wanted, towed the race car on an open trailer for 4 seasons no problem except it didn't stop well.. I would like to of tryed a E4od trans in it, I never had it flat out on the hiway as once you got the speedo needle back to about 0 the sides of the rusty bed
would start flapping and rust fell off..

Here's mt though(s)!

Use the "mild 460" you mention, add a C4 and 2.50:1 ring and pinion. With the frontal area of a pickup, fuel metered by a carburetor, your up against the wall with the 460!

Just my $0.02,
Dave.

Easier or cheaper? The way I figure it with my '86 Supercab by the time I'm done the lift, Dana 60 swap, 460/ZF5 and body work/paint I'll have into it 1/3 or less of what a comparable new truck would cost. Benefit is I get something that looks nicer, and is exactly what I want. Can't order a new truck exactly like I'd want it anyhow, they just don't make them. I'm minimalistic, less is more in my eyes.

I was thinking of something more along these lines:

I think what will end up happening is when the ole F150 plays out I 'll swap that drivetrain into a 51-52...
