Weekend Bantam results and video...

We went out this past weekend. We made it to the money rounds again on Sunday but missed out by .014 seconds (14 thousandths) on a trip to the finals. We're definitely in the hunt! That's two weeks in a row that we've been really close to a final round. Enjoy!

Brock,

It looks and sounds really good. You've got it tuned up and running right where it should. In the left lane, when the car comes off the concrete, and really makes a move hard to the right. I'm guessing it's a rough old track. I liked it when you spotted that Chevy powered dragster a big handicap start.

Are you running carbs or toilets? How high is the top of the scoop above the vent tubes if you're running carbs?

Have there been enough passes to tell if the gear change was enough, or if the car might have wanted more/less?

Charlie,

The car runs a pair of Ron's terminators. The car would probably have been just as quick with a single but the pair on the tunnel ram looks better. The scoop is pretty shallow because we wanted to give the driver as unrestricted a view as possible, maybe 3" at the front and 2.5" at the rear to the top of the throttle body.

The track is 40 years old and still has most of the original surface. The concrete pad is 330' and has heaved pretty badly with our Canadian winters. Some sections of the pad are pushed above the asphalt 1.5" and in other spots it's gone that much low so it's a roller coaster. There is no doubt the car is a handfull on this surface. Running off the concrete is like falling off edge of the world! On the smoother tracks like Napierville it's on a string.

We are probably nuts to run there but it's just too expensive to travel.

The real heavy hitter's at the track are amazed we are able to get down the track, they've told us that no altered has ever been close to the speed of ours at that track. Probably why all the fast guys run dragters with us being the exception. There were a couple of roadsters there last year and they were running mid 5's.

The track operator leases the track and owner won't put any money into it. There is rumor that a group of local businessmen are planning on putting up the money to resurface the track possibly for next year.

The track operator pays out the money so he keeps the competitors coming back. Regular weekends are $1000. to win. There is a big event coming up that's $10,000. Saturday and $10,000. Sunday. The track will be packed for that one and there will be cars from the US for that one. Even Peter Biondo has come up for that event.

The gear change has put the engine RPM exactly where we wanted it. We're going through the traps at 7100-7150 and we're putting less heat in the tranny. The 60's picked up substantially. Our best 60' before was in the 1.06 range and we took an easy .02 off that. Our best is now an unbelievable 1.025. (I still question that but it went 1.03 to back it up.)

How bumpy is it?

Here is a screen capture of the driveshaft RPM (upper) and shock travel (lower) graphs from the last run in the video. As you can see, the track is rough and the tires spin and grip all the way to the finish line. It's amazing it's as consistent as it is.

We went from the 3.70's to 4.11's. The engine still has more in it, we are still a bit fat. next time out we'll go up a couple of steps in the main pill. One thing I'm still surprised at Lem, is how little timing this thing likes. We only have 26 1/2˚ in it. Maybe it will like a little more once we have the mixture dead on.
