Advice needed

A good friend of mine was wanting to know about having me put a new roof on a shed he has. Flat roof, about 17 x 9. I told him my labor would be $200. Comes out to a tad over $1 a square foot. This is for tearing off the plastic corrugated roofing, putting down plywood, tar paper, and shingles. I would be doing the work on my own with no help. My price is too high. I feel like I should let this go and not do the roof.

I consulted with the guy that tought me all the construction stuff I know, and his labor would be about $500.

What do you guys think? Let it go and not have any bad blood between us?

Yup, let it go.

Don't work for less than you want. Could be trying to take advantage of your friendship. Keep your friend by letting him see if he can get it done cheaper!

I agree on this one, let it go. That is a good deal of work to be done for that money. I am no roofer, but have done a couple small sheds... and 200 bucks would be worth it for me to not have to do it. I would consider the removal of the old material the worst part, new work wouldn't be so bad.

I would do it for beer. Tell him to buy the beer and you'll help. And then make sure he busts his *** on the job so he will appreciate what has been done. If you don't drink beer, skip the whole thing......

Where's my beer and that half inch wrench?

I dont ever work on friends stuff for money. I do however help friends out with stuff because thats what friends do, whether beer is involved or not (it for sure helps). Ive discovered the hard way you can lose friends whenever money is involved.

Do like others have said, pass the job up entirely, or tell him you'll lend him a hand whenever HE is ready to do it himself.

Roof replacements are figured in squares. At $175 a suare for labor and materials, that would come out to less than $300.00 for the re-roof with a cheap shingle or rolled roofing. This of coarse does not include the labor for laying down the decking. It's only about a 3-4 hr job. If your slow and take 4 hrs, thats $50.00/hr for labor. Not bad for tax free income!
