'01 F250 7.3L diesel not starting

The batteries appear to be ok. (Tested with volt-ohm meter.) But the key just clicks when trying to start the engine. How can we test what to see if the solenoid and/or starter is the problem? It appears to be the original starter on the truck.

jump the 2 big posts on the sol on the ps fender, its just used as a relay.

If it cranks just replace the sol, they go bad from time to time.

There was a small spark when we layed a screw driver across the 2 front posts but did not try to start it while it was jumped, or is it supposed to start by itself just because it is jumped?

grab a test light go under the truck and have someone turn the key to start it while checking the big wire on the starter .. if you have power you need a starter .. or you could give it a whack with a hammer and see if it starts it might be stuck / jammed..

I just put a starter on my 99 F250 7.3 a couple months ago.. top bolt is kinda a pain in the a$$

Starter is so far the only repair I have had to perform on my folk's 01 F-350. From working in a parts house, I remember we sold alot of them for these Internationals. If I remember they are import crap.

Ok, the one click is coming from what looks like a relay or solenoid on the passenger side of the fender. There does not seem to be any power going to the starter. I put a screw driver across the 2 front terminals and only got a little spark, nothing else happened. The front headlights are strong and do not dim when trying to start. Should I try replacing that relay on the fender or do you all think it is the starter? Battery is 11 v on pass side and 12 v on driver side. ????

Batt voltage is low, but if its not dimming the lights then I would look to the starter. As stated get a test light or volt meter and check the small post on the starter, if its getting power when the switch it hit and the large post also has power the starter is bad.

Does not appear starter is getting power. I tested the inboard (towards the cab) post on that relay on the inner fender and it had 12 v coming to it. I tested the other post (the one one the relay closest to the front of the truck) and got nothing.

did you test it with the key in start position?

Despite what you've heard, opportunity does not knock

I guess I am going to replace the relay tomorrow ($40 from Ford, nobody else seems to stock it!) and get the batteries tested at the Zone. If that does not fix it, I called dbElectrical and they will ship me a new starter for $90.

Angry

Well that was a waste of $40. Put a new relay in, still does the same thing...one side of the relay has power and then the other also after the key is turned on to start it. Starter does not seem to have power going to it though when checked at the starter??? Guess I will through some more $$ at it and get a new starter...

If you do not have power at the starter... it will be a waste of money buying a new starter also.
