I have one of only One built this way I am almost sure. A Marti Report would confirm it but cost too much.
I have a Very Rare Cat, A 1974 Special Order Trailer Towing Package Cougar XR-7.
This Cougar has everything and then some. It has of course, power Steering, pwr Brakes, pwr Windows, pwr Door Locks, pwr Black Leather Bucket Seats, A/C of course and Tilt Wheel, Electric Rear Window Defrost, Delayed Wipers, AM/FM 8 Track Tape Deck, How about this, it has a Factory Tach and Factory Mechanical Gauge Package. Water Temp, Oil Pressure and Volts or Amps. I forget.
It also has 31 Spline Axles with a 3:25 Posi Rear and C-6 Auto Trans. In front of the tranny is a Factory Numbers Matching 460 four barrel engine.
This car was Special Ordered with a Trailer Towing Package and all the Options available it appears.
The paint was Medium Metallic Blue. A previous owner had it painted Carolina Blue.
The car is too Rare and Special to just sit and Rust away. I hate to part it out so I am hoping someone out there will want a Very Special Cat.
This car weighs about 4,700 pounds and when I drove it in the mid to late 80s
it would smoke the tires out of site. There were no GT Mustangs that could hang with her. Yes this Cat has a big block 460 but it is a 1974 and was not supposed to have that kind of power. Ford retarded the timing a couple of degrees. So, when in the late 80s I decided to freshen the engine up a little I installed an earlier 1970/71 Timing Chain and Gear Set and put the timing back to straight up. Now it was no longer Retarded, and boy would she run.
I had to park this Cougar because of tickets and paying too much insurance. I didn't think I would never get her back out on the road again but it has been over 20 years now. She is showing some rust problems and really needs a loving owner to get her back in Show Condition. I just have too many other projects I am working on. No extra time or money for her anymore.
There is rust in the corners of the doors and bottom of the quarters and some in the trunk along the rain gutter.
The Vinyl top is gone and it just looks bad. I know there is more life in her.
I removed the gas tank and washed it out and flushed the fuel lines and fuel pump, removed the carb, took it apart and cleaned it out too. After having added a little Marvel Mystery Oil to the cylinders a few weeks earlier I was ready to fire her up with a fresh tank of gas and fresh plugs.
This baby fired right up and the choke fast idle came on and she ran like a top. No squeals, no clicking, no smoking, not anything but Purrring.
It has been about 5 or 6 years or so since I did the start up but I am sure she will come alive once again with a little help.
I have seen a 1974 Cougar with a 351 Cleveland CJ engine being advertised for $16,000.00. I feel this 460 Cougar would be worth $25,000 or more with some love and attention. Plus it is a lot of fun to drive.
I do hope someone will fall in love with her as I really don't want to part her out and scrap the rest. It is just too special a car for that. Please come to her rescue.
She would make a great tow vehicle for an early 67 up Cougar. Maybe even a Cobra Jet Cougar Eliminator would be right at home being towed behind a bigger Cat with a 460 and a full frame.
I will take $2,500 for the car with a NC Clear Title. I may be interested in some trades for Boss 302 Parts or possibly 460 Race heads. Nothing fancy just something along the line of the Ford Racing SCJ heads or something. Might could use a good Race Built C-6 with the late model 4 wd low gears and 6 gear planetarys.
