old ford racing 460 racing crate motor value???????

found a local guy selling a 460 crate motor with an attached JW "street/strip" C6 for $3500 for the pair.

He seems to think the motor is from the mid 90s (he thinks '96 but I dunno) and claims its only been in a mustang show car its entire life with less than 5000 miles and no race time. The motor has aluminum cobra jet heads, a victor jr intake (marked ford motorsports) with a "holley 850" and a hydro cam measuring ".562 intake .588 exhaust 234 degree intake 244 exhaust at .050 lift". He's asking 3500 for the pair but I don't think its worth that?

Anyone know some more info about these old Ford Racing crate motors? What rods and pistons would be in it? Factory block I assume? Didn't some of these old crate motors from Ford have random oiling issues?

Also, I know nothing about auto transmission values. He says is a C6 built by JW as their "street/strip" model capable of holding 700hp. Says its a 2500-3000 stall. Whats a built C6 worth?

Just looking at it cause it seems like it could be a good deal. I don't need it so its easy to refuse but if its a real deal I have the cash.

TIA

WTF!

The heads and intake alone are $2000. Not to mention the rest of the block and push rods, Carb, and extra's. Then there the Transmission.

If I was the seller I wouldn't sell it to you for sure...
I think its very close to what's its worth given todays economy.

Can you see/hear it run? The heads alone are probably worth a little over $1000. Torque convertors are at least $400.

If it runs good its probably worth it.

See if you can do a leakdown test on it.

it was all assembled 15 years ago using mostly factory stuff.... C6 transmissions are a dime a dozen. its a fair concern to think 3500 for a 15 year old engine and transmission might be a bit high. If it was a stroker or motorsport block or something then yeah, it would be worth it for sure. but cj heads, generic cam, and factory rods and crank from 15 years ago made me wonder.

the question is, will the motor do what you want it to do? If not, do you have $3,500.00 to throw out there on a possible win/loose investment.

I would pay that if it is on the up and up. The engine could be a new production block or a Ford reconditioned .030" over (not sure what year they switched) Should have heavy duty marine rods and forged pistons in it. Should be a solid 500hp on 93 octane.

I fitted one of those motors to a car many years ago. It was the 560HP/535ftlb was the crate motor back then. Pretty sure then they only did the one . Had the CJ rods , cam was 588/614 hydraulic flat tappet with victor intake. Was a tough motor and went well back then compression from memory was like 11:1

If memory serves me right these crate motors weren`t designed for pump gas octane ratings.
