Need to gripe a little

Just wanted to vent a little about NHRA class racing. Been a bracket racer for many years and thought I'd like to do something different. Was thinking about running some division 3 races and maybe the US Nationals. Well as it turns out, my '63 Fairlane with a 429 in it won't fit into practically any NHRA class. Stock, definite no. Super Stock, sorry, on cut shock towers even in the GT classes. Won't even consider running the awful .90 classes. Terrible classes. Even thought about building a 289/4 speed combo. Nope, only way to do that is with Hipo parts. '63 specific Hipo parts....... good luck with that. 260/ 4 speed. Nope, early 260 heads very restrictive never make enough HP. I'm talking about classes where you can successfully campaign a Dodge turbo mini van, an 80's 305 Camaro, a V6 Ranger, a Dakota, or an 1980 Chevy Citation (saw one running last year at Indy), but I can't run a '63 Ford with a big OR small block! UN--Freakin--believable!

How about some non-NHRA events? Pinks All Out is starting back up. There's a company doing some 1/2 mile roll-racing around the country. All very grass roots with run what ya brung type rules.

Hoping Pinks comes back to Indy. Missing my chance last time and like the NMCA/NMRA racing. Would like to run some Nostalgia stuff but most require or prefer and FE in an early Fairlane. Just think it's crazy I can't compete with such a fun car but if you have a powerhouse Chrysler K car, your in!

I decided to go NHRA class racing and after much research I found a Ford that set at the
top of a class. ( NHRA factored HP to weight)

I built that car.

The car's first outing was at a Div 3 points meet. I raced the record holder (chevy) in the finals and beat him. I went through a teardown and was declared legal.

Two weeks later my cars HP was refactored and it was put in the bottom of the next higher class. I changed the camshaft and went to the street.

My wife's father's prostock Pinto was required to carry more weight that the chevys.

At the US Nationals Bob Glidden made it public that many of the ProStock cars were using nitrous. Ghram Light called him a old women who was crying because he could not compete anymore. Lo and behold, the Dodge Boys operation was broken into and their engines ruined.

Pro fuel cars were limited to a 4.84" bore center , while the Fords had 4.9 bore center.(WTF)

I have to quit before I get carried away.

Well, I don't think this instance has anything to do with NHRAs obvious bias against Fords. If I had a '65 Fairlane it wouldn't be an issue. Three different 289s were offered. The real killer is the cut shock towers. Even though it offers no performance advantage NHRA strictly forbids it.

Just make some bolt-on shock tower simulators to get through tech.

Maybe I can use those fiberglass templates I paid Crites way to much money for.

we have several locals running a Nostalgia SS club they are running period correct Hemi blocks with modern heads and parts. There is NO way a period correct FE in my 66 Fairlane will compete with them and they will not allow me to run my 385 series big block.

Years ago I was running a 65 Mustang fastback with a 289 and had one of the first 2 4 barrel tunnel ram intakes on it with 600 holleys. I was required to run in a D/G class because of it. One other car in the class was a 55 chevy with a 409. After several weeks of beating him on a regular basis they declared I had a aerodynamic advantage with the fastback body and required me to add 200 lbs to the car. When I added it in the trunk they protested and made me move it to the front. When I complained the gave me the choice to accept status quo, move to next higher class C/G, or just go home. I chose to go home and did not go back to the track till many years later when it changed owners.

All is not lost. Had a great conversation with a veteran stock eliminator racer and long time Ford racer last night. The jist of the conversation was that NHRA has recognized that original and specific parts are becoming scarce so they've really relaxed the rules in the last few years allowing replacement similar parts. Example would be any 289/302 block that has correct bore, cam bore etc. Instead of the extremely rare '63 specific 289hp parts in my case. When I posed the questions about the cut shock towers, his response was basically "Just build it and if anyone asks questions act stupid"....... Act stupid...... that definitely plays in my court.
