DANA 60 vs. FORD 9" horse power loss?

I was going to put a Dana 60 in my mud racing truck instead of having to upgrade my Ford 9" but now someone told me that the Dana 60 would slow my truck down a lot. This was second hand info. so I don't know why other than a little more weight the Dana 60 would make it slower. If anyone else can give me any answers on this I'd sure appreciate it.

I'm no mud racer, but the 9" is a half ton rated axle, the D60 is 3/4 ton rated, suitable for a 1 ton front, I think 3/4 rated and up would be better hardware for the application, the D70 or Corporate 14 bolt rear and D60 front in particular.

The true advantage of the D60 over the 9in in 4x4 applications is the fact that the D60 is a full float design while the 9in is a semi-float. As far as holding up to horsepower, the 9in will do as good or better. Think about it, how many people actually break a well setup 9in ring gear or case? Usually what breaks is the axle. There are 1.5in 35spl. axles available for the 9in. Most D60s have 1.3in 31spl. axles.

As far as the D60 slowing you down, I doubt that it would be very much. Although the entire assembly is heavier, the pinion centerline is no lower than the 9in.
