70 Mustang Sportsroof vs. Mach 1?

Have a chance to get a '70 Mustang "Sportsroof" pretty cheap. Car has a 351c and an FMX tranny. Needs paint and some bodywork, but it's a solid car that runs and drives. Have a few questions -

What's the difference b/w a Sportsroof and Mach 1? Hood, dash, and interior? Might want to do a Mach 1 clone and need to know how much different it is. Of course, now that C&C is making 429 Boss heads, might be fun to do a Boss 429 Clone...

Would it have come with an 8" or 9" if it wasn't a Mach 1?

Could the 351c be the original engine or did these only come in Mach 1's?

The difference between a regular sportsroof and a Mach 1????......about $20,000 :mrgreen: LOL.
A 351 C was available in the non-Mach 1's as well as in coupes.
The rear should be a 9" inch.

The big engine option for the Mach I was the 428 Cobra Jet; but if you cheat and make it a 429 Cobra Jet, we won't tell!
Wouldn't argue with a Boss clone, either.

The Fastback is just a cheaper Mach 1.....I have a Fastback.....

The fastback was available with the 302,351 C, 390, 428 Cobra Jet.

The 302 had the 8" rear, and I believe everything else came with the 9 inch.......

The interior packages were available on the fastback and included the standard, GT, and Mach 1 packages...

The front inner fender shock towers were reinforced for the 428 CJ...

Another thing to look at is the rear shocks. The big block rear shocks were staggered....

Of course everything was different on the Boss cars....

Mach 1

I have a 70 "M" code Mach 1 that was complete & original when I bought it in 1982. (it's not anymore) Some things my Mach 1 had/has: Comfort weave upholstery, wood grain on the instrument panels, clock, center console, deluxe door panels, magnums,rear sway bar, rocker molding, twist lock hood pins, scoop w/turn signals, Mach 1 letters on front fenders & deck lid, stripes on hood & decklid. I'm sure there are other options; also some of these may have been an option on other models or could have been dealer/owner installed. Either way the fastbacks are cool. If you find one don't let it being a standard model keep you from buying it.

Thanks for all the info. Car looks pretty solid from what I can tell so far; have just seen pics. It's blue with black Mach 1 interior. Will need a headliner, carpet, new hood, paint, and lots of elbow grease, but the price is right ($2100), so I think I've got to buy it. 351C and FMX will probably get pitched; would like to drop in an FE and a toploader. Think it comes with an extra 351C as well. Waiting until I see pics of the underside (floor pans, leaf spring mounts, torque boxes, etc) until I do the deal.

Also, owner said one of the torque boxes might need work; how much is involved here? Haven't tackled this before.

You could clone a Mach or a Boss easily. Most all the parts are available repo or ebay items. The mach 1's and BB boss cars all had a clock in front of the pass seat so you would need to find that dash part and other int. items. The door panel are repo parts. The console is an ebay item etc.

If it was a factory 351 car it should have a 9", but a 302 car would have an 8".

The shock towers are stronger and reinforced in all BB cars 390's and 428's. The rear shocks were offset only on 4 speed cars. CJ and 390 auto cars the shocks were standard location. Real Boss 9's were all 4 speeds so they all used offset shocks.

The torque boxes are a normal repair item for many of these cars. Any good body shop should be able to handle this pretty well. Good luck with your project. I have a 69 waiting in the wings for a Boss clone as well.

For $2100.00 you better jump on it....they don't stay around long for that kind of money....I already have one, but, for that price, I would buy it....

The torque box is not that much of a big deal. I would rather do a torque box than the"pain in the butt" floor pans...

yep, I agree. even if it's just a good shell that needs new wiring, brakes, floor pans... it's worth $2100. I got my rather hacked up 69 mach1 for $2800 5 years ago and still consider it a good deal. During a time period that I couldn't have it in the garage due to my dad's woodworking equipment being there, it got hit by hail, but it needs new paint anyway and only the windshield got cracked. It's kinda nice that my car had a terribly installed factory MustangII front suspension and mini tubbed rear. I don't feel bad about cutting it up for my own use now. I've got a '88 C4 vette front suspension in it that requires the engine to sit quite far back in the firewall. The firewall was cut in several spots and had plenty of holes in it so I didn't mind cutting it out to make room. The floor pans are starting to get some small holes so I didn't mind cutting out a good portion of the trans tunnel either. Post up some pictures if/when you get the car.

I passed on the car. If it was closer, I think I'd get it. But it does have a fair amount of rust (rockers, quarters, etc) so not sure if it's going to be worth 20 hours of driving.
