Have a question about my Ranger's rear end

Sorry Guys. This is not a big block question....
I have a '92 Ranger that I put a 5.0 and C4 in. Now I need to swap out the rear end. It has the 7.5, one legged rear. I have found an 8.8 from a Mustang for cheap....Will it work?????

The Ranger has the center section offset, but, I don't know why.....Can anyone tell me about the offset, and why I can't use the Mustang 8.8...

Thanks
Steve

ranger rear

regionally diferences are almost funny! i am in minnesota and i cannot find a complete 5 lug stang rear, so i am destroying ranger rear ends, lol! one 8.8 for the bigger drum brakes and gears. also robbing two left axles for the 5 lug feature from the smaller rears.
what part of the country are you in? bobn

I think the offset is for additonal gas tank clearance. A 7.5 with a trac-lok will live a while longer than a one-legger. My 5.0L Ranger has proven that. The one leggers tend to break cross pins.

Mustang don't use leafs in the rear (4 links & coils) so there's alot of added 'stuff' to deal with on a Mustang diff.

The Ranger 8.8 (4.0L trucks) is definately tougher, but uses the same dia axles & number of splines as the 7.5". FX4 trucks and Explorers all have the 31 (?) spline 8.8's in them. Problem is FX4's are not that common and Exp's have the spring perches on the bottom of the axle tube and both are wider than your existing rearend.

There's some good info here on Ranger stuff:

the mustang's are the same. it's not the axles that are the weak points on the 7.5's, it's the diffs and the r&p. The 8.8 diff that is 31 spline can be found in all late model 8.8 truck and the irs 2002+ explorers. This is the EXACT same diff as the FRPP HD diff. Then all you need are a set of 31 spline moser axles.

As an answer to a question, I live in Charleston, SC....

Also, to answer another question, I can't afford not to buy this rear end. I found an '98 Mustang Gt 8.8 trac-lock, complete with the disc brake set-up for $150.00....I can't find an Explorer rear for that kind of money...

Anyone want to buy a 7.5 CHEAP?

Thanks Guys
Steve

a 9 "

from an early bronco is only 1" wider If I remember correctly. I had to relocate the spring purches--worked fine.

I have deceided to forget the 8.8....I found an 8" from a '72 Mustang. He just rebuilt it with an Auburn posi and 3:00 gears. It is 3/4" wider on each side. I will have to move the spring perches, but, other than that, it bolts in....

If anyone is in the south east coastal region and interested in the 8.8 that I talked about in the earlier post, let me know and I will send you the purchasing info...
