9inch axle brake question.

I have a 9inch axle for my Futura, and the brakes that came with it (I was told) came off a truck. I tend to believe him as those drums are HUGE. I was wondering, what other Ford 9inch axles had drum brakes that might be a little lighter then this current setup? For example, i'm looking for info like, the setup off a 1971 mustang is good, etc. I basically just want to be able to walk into a parts store and get the complete setup. I'm not racing, this is just for a street car. I don't need the max or setup trick setup.

If there was a disk brake swap that's pretty easy and not too hard on the pocket book i'd be interested in that too.

Thanks.

Wes

You'll have to get the flange bolt pattern measurement off the housing and then look for something compatible. If it has small ends (like the 8") then any of the "normal" 2" rear drum and backing plate setups will work, typical for Falcons, Comets, Mavs, probably Granada, etc. If it's a large pattern, you're going to likely be stuck with truck brakes or big car brakes and backing plates.

Rear disk brakes

Rear disk brakes are very easy fabricate on a 9" Ford, especially if you use a fixed (non floating) caliper and don't need a parking brake.

I built my own.
- Corvette front 13" rotor, $60. Redrill the pattern or use chevy pattern axles/wheels like I did.
- Dodge viper caliper (4-piston) (free donor parts from a friends shop)
- One piece bracket that serves as the bearing retainer as well as the brake bracket. ($30 in material + 2 hours design time)
- Pinion parking brake kit (off the shelf, $200). http://www.tsmmfg.com/Pinion_Mounted_Parking_Brakes.htm

Or, if you're looking for low buck bolt-on kits, check this out...
