Fuel pump upgrade to electric

I have a 79 F-460 7.5 4 barrel in my RV. The mechanical fuel pump died. I looked everywhere for a replacement (Airtex 6981 or Carter M6981). From what I can see they are almost next to impossible to get (unless someone knows of a place). I have been told that I will have to convert to a universal electric pump frame mounted (Airtex E84070). If so I would like to attempt installing it myself since I rebuilt the RV from the frame up due to rot. What do I need to know to make it as painless as possible or am I in over my head. Right know the RV is dead in the water at my house. Also if I can not get it within 2-3 ft of the fuel tank like recommended will that hurt. Appreciate any suggestions.

If you want to keep it mechanical, these guys may just have the Carter fuel pump:http://www.mtl-autoparts.com/apps/fr...R#.U29vPqNOXIV
