I want to add a turbo to my diesel.

I want to convert my 93 IDI to a turbo. I can make adapters. I'd like to have a stock turbo from a 94-up to start with. Let me know what you have.

Garage
You might already know this but the 94.5 and up powerstrokes make more boost than the 7.3 NA can handle. If you use a later turbo you will have to wastegate it accordingly. I think the 7.3 factory turbos in 93 and 94 only made about 7-9 lbs of boost and the most you could turn them up to is about 12-13 and i think and the powerstrokes are in the range of 20-30 i believe. Just a little info fwiw.

Keep in mind the boost level on these turbos are also relative to the amount of fuel you throw at the engine..... If you just bolt on either one of these turbos you wont see much boost..... Not near what you would see on engine they were origionally designed for..... UNLESS you turn up the fuel , there fore you can also limit the amout of boost VIA fuel. It is ultimatley horsepower that limits you on what the older engines can take, not boost.

Just a couple more pennys to add to the discusion.

A close friend of mine performed this conversion. As I understand the compression ration is like 3-5 points higher (or so we where told) in the IDI. We were a little worried about this but it seemed to like the added compression. He took everything off a crashed IDI-T truck and it worked great. I know he put more fuel in it and has been driving it for years. I pulled a racecar accross Texas with it and it ran better than the IDI-T truck that he crashed ever did. Good Luck Kevin S.
